I love fish… honestly I eat just about as much of it as I can…
Recently I have begun purchasing individually packaged fillets. These are great to quickly boil, in the package for a quick snack. When finished boiling the fillets have obviously shrunken and there is a significant amount of water/fish Juice remaining. I have been discarding this.
The question is then, could I add this fish Juice to a compost tea or something?..seems like a great resource if it would work.
I know that a main preparation of KNF farming is FAA (fish amino acids) but that is allowed to ferment with sugars before the resulting liquid is fed at a pretty aggressive dilution to any plants, so my concern would probably be the concentration of what’s in that juice and whether or not it needs to be broken down by some type of fermentation to be of benefit to the plant. I know the homie @BeagleZ is swimming far out in the sea of KNF and he might have some thoughts or advice relative to this ask
I did some research on store-fish awhile back. Some of those filets get soaked in brine for quite some time before being packaged up. Do a taste test on the liquid before feeding directly to plant, make sure its not loaded with salt
Growing up my grandpa would always put the leftovers from cutting up our salmon catches in his garden. He swore by it, last year I buried 2 huge filleted out cobia’s. The next morning the racoons/foxes dug it up made a huge mess and all of the juices had the yard stinking for a week in the hot Virginia sun. I love fish, I love fishing and gardening but I’m never mixing the two again.
Eh, once it’s cooked I dunno. I don’t think I would. Like Legs said, I use FAA and it is fermented.
You get a shit ton of liquid in the first few days but I wouldn’t use that either as the fish needs to ferment in that liquid for at very least 3 months.
But again, once it’s cooked I’m not sure what value it would add. Interested to know though!!
I’m mostly worried about additives and salt. I’m sure it would decompose in the soil, I’m just not sure how fast. I buy the bulk fillets, like 5 lbs at a time, so i wouldn’t consider it organic …
