General use Gardening thread

Anyone here in the uk basically I’m just wondering if there is anything I would be able to start now as wanted to get a normal garden going for a while and keep putting it off

Strawberries, garlic, Asparagus , berry bushes, fruit trees can all be planted in fall. You could also cover a section of grass with multiple layers of cardboard to help prepare an area for gardening.

I’ll have to ask the nosey neighbours as I live in a block of flats with shared garden but I’ll definitely be making some nice beds to plant in

Start very small. Folks will appreciate a small , very well maintained area.Good Luck !

Partial/ mostly shade, in between two large maples. Just in the middle of a relatively flat suburban yard in Ohio. Not too windy, not too wet, not too dry (except during a drought). I planted 3 very small trees about 5-10 feet apart in a triangle. They’ve come up in a nice little grove. They were all seedling grown and from two different sources so they pollinate eachother nicely.

The best thing you could start doing now is prepping your site where you plan to put beds. Cardboard or black plastic to kill off any grass.

I was thinking of making some about 4ft deep so I don’t have to deal with planting in the ground also looking at getting a green house

4 feet deep is overkill. Are you planning on doing in a yard? 18" would probably be plenty in most cases. Lay down cardboard to kill the grass and then build your bed on top of that. As the cardboard breaks down the roots can grow right through it.

Made my potato order from Fedco.

7121B — Adirondack Blue Mid-Season Potato, 2.0 lb — 2 × $7.50 = $15.00
7122B — Adirondack Red Mid-Season Potato, 2.0 lb — 1 × $8.50 = $8.50
7134B — Purple Majesty Mid-Season Potato, 2.0 lb — 3 × $7.50 = $22.50

Purple Majesty may be the best potato I ever ate. (very healthy too) Also trying out an Adirondack Blue and an Adirondack Red this year.
Potatoes are my number one use for my saved grow soil. Mostly 15 gallon fabric bags…just dump them out. Purple Majesty’s don’t get much bigger than the seed potatoes but they are plentiful.

More of those tomato seeds came through after that point so i potted them to make up for lambs quarters I’d been growing accidentally.
Pic last week.

Its been colder the plants don’t look great but surprisingly they’re still growing.

I was going to cut them at the start of last month but decided to nip the top shoot and remove most of the flowers to hopefully concentrate the growth idk if it actually works out like that but it’s biggest it might even ripen :yum:

A tactic i learned to hasten tomatoes ripening is root pruning. Once you get some tomatoes on the vine, take a shovel.on one side of the plant and stomp it in to prune off that one side roots. It is said to ripen that plant then earlier than the others. Rodale press. Good organic gardening info.

Interesting. Stressing them out to hasten ripening. In a way that makes sense. And I’d trust Rodale Press on something like this.
