Not really a greenhouse per se but my state requires me to keep my outdoor plants protected from unauthorized access as well as hiding them from plain view (those ugly nasty weeds must be hidden!).
I’m using a dog run made of chain link fence panels 6’H x 10’L x 10’L (linked below). I can’t find anything suitable to cover the “walls” with though. At first I thought window screen would be good but it will reduce light transmission too much. That’s no good.
Then I thought of using some diffused poly for a greenhouse but that won’t flow much air and heat will build up excessively. The location will have constant sun from the front, over the top and down on the other side for a total of least 12 hours/day this time of year.
Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas would be appreciated, thanks.
There’s a discount store near us, that sells rolls of bamboo screening. It’s about 6’ tall. I’ve zip tied it to chain link fence and it looks pretty good. Air could still flow through. It’s a quick and easy screen/hiding option that doesn’t cost too much.
Thanks for this. Will enough air flow through though? I’m certain light will be reduced significantly as well. Maybe I could only use a strip every other time to alternate.
I think poly is your best option. Try to keep everything modular and not permanent. That way you can move everything around as you need to. Think of your greenhouse like a sailing ship that needs sails to be put up or taken down constantly.
Plant camouflage plants around the perimeter of your grow. Cleomes are a great flower to hide your grow area. The leaves of the Cleome make the perfect camouflage.
Pretty sure the law states it shouldn’t be seen from public. Meaning can’t be seen from sidewalk/road/ etc. The way I see it, if your neighbor can see it from their private property, well that’s private not public.
I’m leaning this way too. Maybe attach the top and bottom with rods or poles so I can roll the top down or the bottom up a few feet each for added ventilation if need be.
Indeed about the roof. It dawned on me today I can make another fence panel to block access to the inside from the top yet not cover it with anything so heat can escape and full light can hit at the height of the day. So the plastic, tarp or mylar didn’t hurt light or air flow?
I agree 100 percent! I only need to block the two sides viewable from a “public space”. That public space happens to be a fairly busy road with plenty of car traffic. The other side will be against a wall. The fourth side and the “roof” fence panel will be left uncovered.
air flow not so much i should imagine that light is limited seedlings never stretched to much for lack of it the old seedling sun reach never seemed to be a problem under the cloth we planted tobacco tomatoes onions garlic my parents were sticklers for strong stems no spindly things as they would not survive the planter single row two seats. all i know is a layer of plastic will move you a full grow zone south if you go the plastic route see about the UV rated stuff
