Have to move some plants

Okay, I think I have run into a “little” problem.

Have 5 plants in my regular area that are growing in a Low Pressure Aeroponics setup (27gal HD tote with a pond pump and sprayers). They are in 2" RW in 3" cups. It looks like two of them are going to be male, which is great, as I was going to put a male and the best female together for a bit of romance (Bum-chicka-bum-bum) in my wardrobe cabinet (still not finished but it will work).

There is only one problem… I don’t have another hydro setup (of course I didn’t think about it when I started, that would be too easy).

Can I transplant into Coco Coir in 3 gal fabric pots without killing them? The Male (getting little bumps on it so I assume it will be male) has some crazy long roots that I am afraid are going to get demolished in the process. I do have a few 5 gal buckets and could probably get an air pump and set up for DWC.

Has anyone done the switch successfully or will I just kill them?

Please don’t kill them.
There may be some transplant shock but it should be no big issue. Way back in the day, used to have a hydro setup for flower and soil in veg. Had to clean the roots off of nine plants and repot into hydroton once a month for like 12-18 months. Never lost a plant.

If your able take some cuttings as a backup in case things don’t go as planned to be on the safe side.

To me, it sounds like there wouldn’t be a lot of stress going from soil to Hydro. The problem I see is the roots being twisted going into soil when they have been able the hang freely. They aren’t a huge mass but they are for sure longer than the depth of the pot.

I would love to, but my problem is space. I only have two spots to grow in right now, the shower where I have my tote, and the wardrobe that I am converting. I just turned the one over to 12/12 on Friday and once I move the male and female, I will have to put the wardrobe in 12/12 as well. Then I would have no where to keep them in veg for at least 2 months.

Here’s a question, how much light do I really need to keep them going in veg? I might be able to set something up to keep them for the time being. Any one have any ideas send them my way.

whaddabout gentle perlite?

Exactly.
Step one; hold the plant steady with the roots hanging loose into the pot, and put in one handful of soil (or coco).
Step two; tap the side of the pot gently to settle it.
Step three; start back at step one until done.

I have a rogue tomato plant that’s effectively in an impromptu hydro. I’ll transplant it now and edit this post with a couple pictures.

@WMoon518 This plant was growing in the side of a driveway and was removed from the soil, and put into the rocks without issue. If she gets stressed from the move she will probably abort her flowers.

Are you talking about ONLY perlite? Wouldn’t that be an expensive option? Also, all the perlite I have been able to get is more like dust than anything else.

yeah straight perlite, no pH, doesn’t hold nutes…it’s all on you hehehe

the smaller stuff is about 20$ for 4 cu. ft. at my local hydrow shop… i think the larger chunky pahroc is more like double that. the dusty shit is probably home-depot miracle grow or for seedling mixes i’d bet.

look for a materials yard if you can’t get to a hydro/grow-shop… kinda place that sells gravel & hauls with dumptrucks. i was getting 4cu ft bags from one for 15$ a year ago.

A 2-4 tube fluorescent light would probably do real close to the top 3-4 inches away
