I grabbed a bale of Promix HP the other day and will be throwing some beans in it next week. I’ve never used it before and curious of any helpful advice or sage wisdom anyone can provide. I was planning on mixing a little additional perlite, but is there anything you’ve learned in your time using it that’s good to know?
There’s many varying opinions on optimal PH, when to start feeding, etc. Always like to hear others’ experiences
I’ve never ph’d pro mix, never added perlite.
Depending on what you got if it’s the orange bag strictly seedlings up to 2-3 weeks before bag nutes wear off.
At this time uppot to pro mix with mycos gardens blend.
All you need is:
A good 20-20-20
Bone meal
Gypsum salt
EWC
Pure blend pro for dirt veg and flower , I also keep their cal/mag around just in case…
I finish in 2gal pots and get 3 dry plus zips under a 600w air-cooled hps in a 2 x 4 x 5’ tall.tents.
Anything else is strictly over kill and unnecessary.
Appreciate the wisdom my friend. The bag I got is the white packaging, but to my knowledge it’s the same as the orange (though unsure if the orange contains mycorrhizae). I was planning to run salts, hence my assumption of the need to adjust PH before feeding. I’ll be finishing in 3 gallons, but using LED (that’s a first as well as I’ve used HID previously). Your yields are in-line with my hopes. Going to get a grow log going next week. Hope you’ll stop by
It’s made to be plug and play and it mostly is. Needs nutrition from day 1. Just plant and water with nutrients, it’s soilless media like any else. 6.0-6.5 pH. Extra perlite is nice but almost every non-Cannabis container plant in the country is grown with a similar mix to Promix. Extra perlite is extra waterings which may or may not be what you are looking for but even regular Promix HP is pretty heavy in water holding capacity, made to reduce labor costs in frequent watering and for the end consumer that doesn’t want to water frequently.
It’s just peat and pumice/perlite and lime and probably a wetting agent, nothing fancy about it, but it works great.
Commercial potting soil is just Promix with a little manure, worm castings, or compost. Adjust accordingly.
I prefer perlite based soilless mixes but it’ll do just fine.
Thanks brother. Good to hear your thoughts. I’m sure it’s there and we can charge this to my shitty memory, but what medium are you using for those sexy ladies you have going in your Basement thread? You do hydro, no?
I have used about everything. Cost/ease/effectiveness that works best for me is perlite/vermiculite about 75/25 ratio. Perlite and coco is great too same ratio. Promix and perlite is great too depends on how much you feel like watering. Promix holds a TON of water, even the high porosity “HP” version. Nice if you only wanna water every few days, but faster drying and more porosity tends to generate higher yields. Absolute best soilless media on the market is rockwool mini cubes but far too expensive, like 10x as much as perlite/verm or perlite/coco.
Literally all the container plants at every hardware store Garden Center are Promix or a clone thereof with osmocote or a variation thereof.
Good stuff. This is going to be fun as I’m doing a bunch of things for the first time with this run. I also haven’t grown any cannabis since the Bush Jr. era and have lots of rust to shake off. Thanks for the info bro.
Any questions or need consultation DM is open. Only thing that can really go wrong with commercial soilless mixes is inconsistency between batches, pH especially. If you have softer water you might get mild pH issues in a peat based mix with what the company assumes to be enough lime to adjust for the largest customer base, just something to watch for. If you have hard water it’ll probably be nearly plug and play.
The immediate feed was what made me pause initially. Any soil I’ve grown in (FF, Miracle Grow, etc) has already been charged, like Vernal mentioned. I’ve been told so many good things about Promix though and excited to give it a shot.
I’ve always avoided pre charged soils because how am I supposed to know when it runs out other than to keep an eye out for deficiencies? Two evils six of one etc
Promix is just Fox Farm or Miracle Gro without the compost, manure, and castings.
Only advantage they have is you don’t need to feed much in veg. You’re feeding anyway in flower, and water all the time, might as well add fertilizer to that water day one.
FWIW I start seeds in regular strength nutrients. I have never burned a seedling ever. Folks talk about burning seedlings but IDK what it even looks like.
I’ve mixed bone and blood meal with promix with great results on the upstart. I also have held off and folial fed to give the plants a quick boost if ever needed.
True story here. In those mediums, I always burned plants when first growing in them. It took getting to know the longevity of the pre-added nutes already present in the soil before recognizing when to supplement additional nutes. I did like FF soils, but they have always been overpriced imo and I don’t care for their nute lines.
