You’d want to look up what ppm is best to shoot for based on your water quality, I think tap water can be up to 200 ppm to start, and then dilute your urine to a level that won’t burn your plants based on their size/growth stage. Pretty sure I was feeding with each watering, again, it was a couple years ago.
Urine is also great to put on your compost and garden beds, I’ll use it any time Ive got lots of wood and high carbon stuff that I want to break down quicker. I only put it on the garden beds in the off season, though, to help break down stuff.
I’m using living soil too, and there’s enough nutrients in there, so the urine is only like a cherry on top. I think I’ll just feed once a month, a little kick in the ass, just for fun.
I’ve just recently started a permaculture garden, still digging swales, been pouring diluted urine all over the place, it’s all clay soil… Throwing down all the mulch I can find.
I’ve just been using a top dressing of earthworm castings and ground up malted barley along with rootwise microbe complete, and compost teas on my living soil, and the plants seem happy. Nitrogen is easy to overdo, and it’s hard to undo things in a living soil since you can’t really flush anything out once it is in there.
I’ve really got to do some reading on some compost teas. I like the idea of it more than standard bottle nutes but for whatever reason I never messed with them.
I have a friend who brews… I really gotta get around to go pick up a bunch of his spent malted barley to use as mulch. It would be perfect as mushroom substrate too.
Buildasoil has a one page spreadsheet/schedule for their products with the diy inputs side by side for people like me with more time than $$$, I’ve been kinda basing my current grow on it.
I graduated the 2014 Geoff Lawton online PDC do I have any classmates in here? Getting ready to start some 18 day compost piles, I generally piss on the piles once or twice while turning just kick it up a notch. I also got some really nice rabbit shit this go round and I’ve been saving up shrimp shells to throw in for some chitin. It’s gonna be good.
I have no doubt compost teas are beneficial, but it never appealed to me, again you need to spend money, buy a pump that uses electricity, for that tiny bit extra yield. It’s not worth it to me.
Haven’t done a PDC, but you are definitely speaking my language! Urine/nitrogen is great for speeding up compost with lots of carbon (sticks and wood). Rabbit shit can be put directly on your garden and worms love it, so if you score a truck load of it you’ll get a bonus worm bin too, most likely:)
I discovered him recently, scrounged the internet for every video I could find.
What a wealth of information that man is. I need to go to the library and check if they have any Bill Mollison books.
I’ve used diluted human urine in the past for outdoor grows, plants were always nice and healthy. For an added boost pop a multivitamin in the morning the day you plan on using the urine and it’ll up the levels of micronutrients and trace minerals.
I think it’s funny when people get squeamish over it, after all, guano, manure and droppings are just fancy names for shit.
@Rogue what’s funny is a day or 2 after you posted that horse manure thread my neighbour who’s friends with a farmer dropped off 4 bags of well aged horse manure. When I was turning it into the soil my kids were grossed out cause they saw a worm and said ewwww that worms gonna eat poop. I busted out with “circle of life” from lion king, haha.
