I’m just trying to see if there’s anything someone could do to to avoid foxtails or fluffy bud.
I’m mostly asking because I believe one of my plants is, but reversible or not doesn’t matter to me. I’ll accept what happens. I’m curious though as if there’s an ideal conditions for certain types to avoid fluffy buds I’d definitely like to know it. I want to improve my next grow to not have as many problems. I’ll have a tent though in a few weeks, so that’s going to help a lot.
In my experience, fox tails form from temps being to high, and some strains just throw em’ no matter what you do. But vpd is a relatively new concept to me so you could be on to something with the RH being to low. I know low humidity definitely screws with the plants though. Anything under 30 in my experience.
I try to store my jarred buds in about 50% humidity. I use little hygrometers to take the guess work out. I don’t think trichomes would get brittle as long as the plant had regular waterings, but with really low Rh, the leaves stomata will close, as the plant tries to conserve water. This is where I think vpd would come into play, but I have a lot more to read about that.
I’m a bit maniac with my RH (50 is my upper red zone) and with my temps (21c is my goal at any cost, night and day). And i don’t have any recurrent problem of this order outside referenced specimens known for that in my stock (fluffy/foxtail madness).
Now this graph look weird to me. 35°c and 90% Rh look like a rice cooker ^^
The VPD is mostly used for “hard” greenhouses than are using high heights and to program the automatic opening of the “vents” with sensors. Because the soil is “breathing”. I don’t see any point to extrapolate it for indoors spaces.
I know the jungle boys out in Cali say they live and breath by the vpd chart and they produce some pretty decent stuff that I’ve seen so far. But I’m sure they use a greenhouse or warehouse for their op lol!
So what are we talking about here fluffy buds or fox tailing? To me there not the same thing IMO sparse fluffy buds are a results of not enough light I can attest to this from running a crappy LED Chinese burple light from seed to harvest in my first cycle of growing cannabis , fox tailing a saw a small bit in some outside autos I ran this summer which I believe is from other environmental components .
this year has been the coolest summer since 1977 here so it’s a freak, but typically have 110F/46C a couple of times and several weeks of 100F+/37C+…with those being 20%RH or lower.
according to the VPD graph i should use a LOT of water at about 2pm in July. i don’t know about actually watering the foliage, but can certainly soak my shadecloth & ground.
i wonder what the bract is “trying” to do by enlarging in hot/dry environments.
I’ll try and take pics of my liberty haze when I get home. She’s a fox taily bitch lol! I’m warning you ahead of time my camera sucks. You might be able to see some tails in my tent thread, but probably not cause my camera sucks
Try following the vpd and you will see a difference even on a small scale. Once I did it I saw noticeable increase in growth rate and much happier more healthy plants.
But remember you’ll be dialing everything down through out the flower period.
Example: first week Temps around 80 with correct humidity, each week start dialing the temp/rh back a little(mimicking fall), until the last few weeks you’ll drop the rh out of the vpd sweet spot to avoid mold…
It’s not necessary on small scale but it does make a difference.
Also take into consideration that plants have an ideal temp range, so the 35c is far out of range for this plant…
46 my god, nice test field btw ^^ For the RH i see often people getting mad with it, trying to pushing theyr rate high. I’m not from this school, water and vapor is my ennemy both for pollen and the trichomes.
I’m flowering under neon dewb. If i play to handle my space like a greenhouse, i will smoke spinach ^^
Some strains just foxtail… some do it in high heat.
So if it’s not genetics, lower the Temps to avoid foxtails. Fluffy buds could also be genetics but is general lack of light intensity, think lower buds on an plant that wasn’t pruned properly.
Besides lighting your environment is the biggest factor in a grow. These two things make a bigger difference than any other factor in a grow…
You know your space better than I ever will so if it’s working for you keep going…
That is just what I have observed over my course of growing/studying.
Under neon? That’s interesting have you noticed any differences between that and hps/other lighting?
