I'm seeing red

I grew with LED bestva and aglex cob led lights

I thought it was maturation on the top cannopy that did the color change

all my lowers were mega green

 purple weed has always been less potent tho. It was just different. And usually came with a wildly different terpene profile. :person_shrugging:

Try telling that to a pre-internet 20-something yr old stoner though  :man_shrugging:

Purple is highly genetic. It’s due to anthocyanins there is only so much purpling colder temp will achieve. Purple also is high in LED grows because the plant uses it to decrease high light stress. Anthocyanin doesn’t photosynthesis as effectively as chlorophyll but it does contain other benefits as well as being an antioxidant if I remember right. The colder temps is also due to colder temps degrading chlorophyll and retain heat because of darker pigmentation. Purple has been highly sought after so it has been highly breed with. A lot of Afghan and “Indica” dominant varieties are high in anthocyanins. A true purp will display purpling without any alteration. Like Trop Cherry 8. After 2 years this was my keeper true purp sadly lost. From when ninja was still with ocean grown. Ninja Fruit.

Here is a grow journal I did on another forum testing colder temps and a product called purple max. Using a non-true purple Ken’s gdp.
https://www.rollitup.org/t/kens-gdp-indoor-dwc-grow.971800/

A puple plant cannot grow as effectively (Total potential) as a plant that stays highly chlorophyll pigmented (green~) because it looses that percentage of plant mass ability to photosynthesize to its total potential.

Hope this helps.

I think the cooler running LED’s flip the purple pigmentation trait and exasperate things. The stomal guard cells see the temperature as comfortable yet they’re being blasted with intense light at the canopy. The purple pigmentation effectively limits a leafs photosynthesizing capabilities.

I’d imagine stomal density plays into this. Plants with less stomal density have less resources to utilize water movement to deal with the harshness of an environment. Many blessings and much love

I think it’s a combination of things. Strains with lots of color have been the dominant hype since cookies started taking the market over. Plus, flower brokers love purple, blue, red… literally anything but green because green weed often turns brown or golden as it cures out and brokers want to be able to sell dispos older weed. Purps stay Purple for the most part. I have a variety I’ve been running the last 5 years or so that is a cross of a bunch of 80s and 90s Genetics that stays green as hell even under my led.

Yeah I would think it’s mostly selection driven by bag appeal. A lot of the modern elite hybrids share a common gene pool and are mixed and remixed. It’s like cookies fam started with one song, sampled to make more songs, and then sampled those songs to make more etc. after a while it all sorta becomes the same. Being in a warm climate, it’s obvious here that a lot of the colour is temp dependent, but some stuff like Tropicana cherry goes deep red or purple even when flowering in the middle of summer here. Maybe it’s the case that the genetics of the threshold temp where the plant produces anthocyanins is being selected for, either inadvertently or deliberately.

Green with a gold tint is EXACTLY the type of flower I look out for…

I feel the same, but in the age of Instagram weed culture, bag appeal is king for many younger smokers.

I grew PCKxICC5 and the buds were so dark they were black. Grew 'em under HPS. Right now I am growing HPS and LED in the same room, but the buds look identical under either light. I did a trial where I put several different buds LED and HPS in the same bag, then asked people to point out the hps buds and the LED buds. They were unable to differentiate.

I dropped the temp low to get the red out in one strain and the plant next to it was still pine color.

Yeah that sadly seems to be the case even though bag appeal literally means nothing. The frost is a lie. Hell, these days it’s not even bag appeal anymore, it’s IG/Reddit Hype. Most of the legal dispos you can’t even see nor smell the weed before you buy it. You just have to hope for the best or know ahead of time. Hope the dude running the terminal knows what he’s talking about :joy: but the seed game runs about the same way.
