Manā¦wtf??? Checked my bin and I have none, zero, nada in my bin??? Wtf? My substrate was moist but not wet (drying on top and more moisture to the bottom), lots of food but nothing they arent supposed to get (onion, potato, meat, grease, dairy). Iām at a loss of what happenedā¦found a bunch of fucking ants crawling aroundā¦any chance they could have got into the bin and ate my worms???..if the worms are slimy enough, are they able to climb out of plastic bins?
Totally buggered situationā¦
Yea Iv seen that in previous posts Iām still trying to figure that one out.
Iv had little sugar ants I my bins at times the worms donāt seem to be bothered by them For some reasonā¦ maybe dump the whole bin out in the sun and see if the ants scatter and run Away
Oh definitely they can crawl up anything! Any dead ones lying around The bin is this Is outside I assume . Usually they donāt get far before the dehydrate and die
Yeah-- They will leave if itās a ābadā environment and come out of the holes or cracks, any way they can. When this has happened for me it has been due to compost heat or noxious fumes building up in an underventilated bucket. So find them & stat over.
Well, shitā¦here we areā¦another blunder to add to the learning experience.
Pre-dump
Looks like a grub or what use to be one
Maybe it got to hot for them? Did ya have more material than whatās pictured ? Cause that doesnāt look like thereās any bedding left havBig a larger mass of material will help combat large temperature swings and help keep things cooler
For a 10$ investment a 20-25 gallon smart pot would be so much better for ya @Tappy better air exchange , better drainage, worms donāt like crawling around in their own poo to much looks like that could of been harvested and new bedding put in over a month ago
Iv done away with plastic bins years ago and havenāt looked back since Iv had my pots 3-4 years now or better and there still in great shape! Think I picked that one up from clackamas coot in one of his pod cast! Shit brotha if ya lived closer you could come in over and have some and share a bowl or two!
itās all about climate! my experience was the opposite!
Was straight peat mossā¦I added some shredded cardboard to the centre and veggie scraps in the top right and bottom right corners. My bin was on a very slight slant so the moisture gradient would flow and the worms could stay in their preferred moisture level.
Shitā¦now that you say it, peat has 0 nutrients correct?..inert?..did I starve them to death with too little food?
Fuck meā¦ive only had it for about a monthā¦poor wormsā¦it takes a strong man to cry over dead wormsā¦fishing or not.
My bin was in the lowest part of the basement, mostly shaded sitting at 60% rh and about 18c with moving airā¦ughā¦I bit this hard.
My poor wormsā¦
Peat is ok IMO but fall leaves and yard debris would be better plus itās free ā¦ had ya ever seen baby worms? There quite small like this (s) or even smaller Iād say the depth of bedding would be a large Contributor also Iād say 18ā maybe would be best and lots of room!
Hey, I think I have asked before (canāt remember, old timers settinā in) but has anyone seen a cheap, standup utility sink? The cheapest I have found is about $50-$60. Want to use that as a base to my eventual worm bin.
If I were to indulge in a worm set up Iād probably go with a mega worm INN there slick in design have a total zipper closer to keep bugs out and the bottoms open for easy harvesting
The original worm inn Prototype , believe it or not was a pair of denim jeans
Shit if ya know a good seamstress you could probably make one of these on the cheap!
Shit all they are is a large inverted fancy trash bag with draw strings
Mine was 3" - 6"ā¦frigā¦
Ohh way to shallow my friend they canāt hardly escape the light at that depth!
There was next to no lightā¦and it was on a concrete floor with moderately low temps ( thought)
