Great! Thanks for letting me know. I am really enjoying having them to take care of, so glad they are healthy!
Those are lots better than mine. Nice big fatties. Mine don’t seen to be growing.
never add onion skins. and a thin layer of marmite or vegimite or malt extract on a slice of bread acts as an afrodeziac to the worms and they multiply
I have added ground malt barley. Should I do something else to to the barley? I’m not sure what the other stuff is.
Just moisten the barley & any other feeds.
Marmite & vegemite are strange compounds developed by desperate Aussie prisoners to help them chase kangaroos.
That’s black gold right there mate @cannabissequoia
:Vegemite that is, the Marmite is for the UK geezers and they tried but failed hard trying to box kangaroos
This guy had his Vegemite for breakfast
(Volume up)
Well I know why I didn’t know what it is.
Blockquote THE US has banned Vegemite, even to the point of searching Australians for jars of the spread when they enter the country.

Time to say goodbye to the worms for the winter. Lacking a clear winterization strategy and not wanting to drag the worms into the house, I decided to empty the worm bin on top of the compost pile.
This should really jump start the compost, and also give the worms a chance to return to the backyard soil from which they were collected.
If your compost pile is big enough for winter protection I’d just cover it with heavy straw and a tarp … I just move mine into the garage for winter I set the 25 gallon smart pots up in heavy styrofoam boards and they do fine in a unheated garage if it gets really cold I wrap in heavy bubble wrap and put heavy layers on top .
Question! I read how I needed a percent of green and brown. I added completely dry trim and year old maple leaves (collected this spring). The problem is when I get the humidity up, they mold. What do I need to do?
Mold is not necessarily a bad thing.
When I get it, I ‘plow it under’. Usually it is a fungus and that aids in the breakdown of the material… The worms seem to like it (so far).
I guess I should throw some pictures in of my worm bin. I’ve had a 50Gal (200L) bin going in the garage all summer. Processing old soil, kitchen scraps and weeds… and smoothies ‘a la Cadman’.
Cheers
G
Indeed, leaf fungus can be one of the best for natural soil.
@Gpaw I would love to see what ya got going on. It is getting cold here, but I want to get some bins started. My daughter is in FFA and she may choose to do a project with worms/worm composting, so may be able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone with us doing worms together.
Very cool! I was in FFA, my Dad was the ag instructor. Did 4-H my whole childhood. That was when my Dad got me a grow table. I started all the seedling for our garden. I loved that thing.
That’s pretty awesome, good way to “plant the seed” in a kids heart heh. She will be trying to put in for a FFA grant, if they like her idea she could get 1000$ to do the project. Something about a ag project and plan to make money off it, something like that. I told her worms would be where its at heh. No one around here sells worm castings, so they may think the idea is alright. I have been needing to make a bin anyways, so I could just help her get set up good and teach her how to keep them happy and alive, then I can just get a little worm compost here and there when I need it heh. Grant or not, I think she will want to do it for one of her FFA projects anyways, so should be fun going with a little bigger setup than I myself was going to do at first.
No need to worry about mold. Remember, worms don’t eat what you put in the bin, they eat the bacteria and fungi that break down what you put in the bin.
The one thing I see in your question Is percentages of green and brown is that with dealing with worm bins it should be mostly carbon sources(Brown) what your bring up is in regards to thermal composting a whole different topic where a C:N ratio of about 30/1 is used in ,therm composting where piles can and should get into a least 150-160 F … worm composting is a cold composting Is a whole different ball game .
Tried Vegemite in Honduras. Spread on toast. BLECH!
Then my Aussie friend made a sandwich, forget exactly what was in it, but it was pretty tasty, AND had vegemite in it…
Ok, so its not totally blech, the right combination makes it work. But alone? blech!!! lol
