Happy you’re here! I’m not doing anything special… yet. Hey I love Old timers, they have knowledge I can’t get anywhere else.

Absolutely possible - it would take a bit of work. It would take outcrossing a freak to any line that expresses consistently with dark plants (such as the tux).

Ideally if you found a mother which expresses how you want in the F1 or f2 you could keep her around for a few back crosses. The f1’s wouldnt likely express at all how youd want - you’d take two of those plants to take the line to f2 (even if they were not pinnate or black - however the more desired traits the better - but getting to f2 is more important than finding your desired traits in F1) where with enough seeds of f2 you’d find a plant that ticks both the dark and pinnate and style leaf .

From that point you could continue matching plants which expressed ideally. Get there faster with some bx’d to an ideal candidate and by f4 you’d see some promising expressions. From there it’s be pretty smooth sailing and you’d have a ‘stable’ black pinnate plant.

If you ever get there - I’d be keen to add such a selection to my personal bank.

Wow thanks for all the juicy details. I’m currently wondering if I can set up an outdoor mom situation so I can take advantage of no frost risk and good air flow. I currently don’t have the option of any indoor set ups with the largest reason being more maintenance and a steep cost. I live in zone 10. Just need to find a good affordable water proof light and make a doohickey to hang it from perhaps…

update:

First to pop was black Lebanese x Violetta by SoilTech, unfortunately it also seems like it was the first snack for a little bug. Doesn’t happen too often but always sucks when it does. Probably need to refine an indoor seedling set up, it’s just hard for me to do anything indoors when it’s not my home. Gen Z problems lol.

Little Freakshow chugging along slowly

Yesterday I got even more aromatic plants to add to my good-smell collection. One stand out gal is this “Pineapple Sage” we got. It has such a strong pineapple scent, almost bubblegummy. Super fruity and bright. I’m kind of obsessed with it, huffing it like a maniac. Tastes like leaf with a spritz of pineapple! I definitely am going to practice propagating cuttings with this one. I want one million of them to gift to family and friends. Apparently it gets red flowers.

The weed all looks good (nice freakshow!), but that pineapple sage! WOW, does that ever sound like a winner!! :+1:

Honestly it’s probably my favorite non-weed plant in my yard now. Highly recommend. I’ve heard that there’s a cultivar of this that smells of tangerine…

I know what you are dealing with. The Universe culls most of my plants before they get 5 inches tall. :joy: Only the strong survive. I cant afford to baby my plants. Sometimes I start with a dozen just to end up with a few. Its like the “Highlander” movie. “There can be only one !”

maybe I should have soaked some more! I don’t want to tell you how many seedlings I killed before I figured the watering thing out… I read a comment by an oger here saying to just not water them 1 wk after sprouting and it was an instant improvement. No spray bottles too. Hopefully the universe spares my little guys so I actually have some feedback to give on the strains I was so kindly gifted :sob:

Happy Juneteenth Og, celebrate your freedom today.

Lot’s of little sprouts… nibbled sprout is chugging along, unfortunately 1 80’s durban had its entire top nibbled off, but the rest are survivors… Both ABC’s popped.

Mystery Afghan is looking a little beat up… but surviving. I put it in a substrate that retains water a little too well because I was short anything else. I’ll probably move it to a new pot with better soil.
An acquaintance of mine send me some Acapulco Gold seeds in the mail, the sourcing is a bit of a mystery, so I don’t know if it’s the real deal or some distant cousin. May save those for next spring.

First attempt at cloning appears to have been a success! All done outdoors. I’m likely going to use it for GA3 experiment…

Currently in the seedling waiting phase. Some have damped off, some have emerged victorious. Added compost and mulch onto my soil for the first time after discovering that mulch is love and mulch is life. While we wait, here are some successful pineapple sage clones and another rooted cappuccino. I’m waiting on some cover crop seeds as well, I’m really into self sustainable soil that gets better with every use.

I’ve been preparing some pots like these for when my plants get a bit larger. I use two sealed terracotta pots in the center to fill with water so the soil stays moist as the cover crop seeds germinate in this hot weather. Basically kindly borrowing from the inventors of the olla. When I remove the pots you can see all the roots that gathered around them. The left over hole makes a great way to easily transplant anything in. I’m unsure if the roots being gathered towards the site would provide any benefit, but its pretty neat. The hole is deeper than it looks!

Meanwhile, I got an indoor seedling set up figured out. Ever since the start of my growing journey, I’ve struggled with damping off. I’ve done a lot of reading on this forum to try to mitigate the issue with some success, but a few of my favorites still get picked off every now and then. This morning I saw one of my supafreak seedlings slumped over, pretty disheartening.

It’s caused by over watering! Make sure there is really good drainage as a seedling and don’t water often.

Thats what I’ve been trying! I only water if the soil looks bone dry but it seems even then I’m making mistakes. The supafreak that was bent over had dry substrate.

I’ve seen another situation where the light and nutrient solution meet at the base of the stalk and that can make the seedling super spindly in that location so it falls over. That kind of thing can rot a mature plant off at the base of the stalk.
