Mushroom compost

Who all is using mushroom compost? Last two grows i used 60% mushroom compost,20% top soil, rest perlite…weening myself off of miracle gro soil (-: but, so far seems to be a good mix. Thought i may have a ph issue, but have not yet. The mushroom compost is pretty inexpensive by the yard, and they sure seem to like it. Does this make me almost an organic grower? Lots of worms in this stuff, and they seem to not bother the plants. Haha

It is wonderful i have used it outdoors in raised beds but it has things to look out for. I compost it uncovered and water occasionally if it isn’t rained on.

Mushroom Compost for Gardening Mushroom compost is generally sold in bags labeled as SMC or SMS (spent mushroom compost or spent mushroom substrate). It is available at many garden centers or through landscape supply companies. Mushroom compost is also available for purchase by the truckload or bushel, depending on its use in the garden. There are several uses for mushroom compost. It can be used as soil amendment for lawns, gardens, and container plants. However, this product should be used with caution due to its high soluble salt levels. These salt levels can kill germinating seeds, harm young seedlings, and cause damage to salt-sensitive plants, like azaleas and rhododendrons.

I got mine at a local place, filled my dump truck with it before last winter. Put it out back, started using it heavily this grow. Was experimenting with it before hand, but i always use it outside.

I would use it inside after composting without to much fear. The only thing i wanted to point out was the salt that you should make sure is leached out.

I have only used two loads years ago. Luckily i make enough of my own compost now.

Actually, i used it at first 100% and got massive looking rust spots…ph issue i believe. Thats when i started adding some top soil n pearlite.

mushroom compost is great. very fungi dom. cannabis is a bacteria loving plant though. but still loves the fungis help. now i do have mushrooms that grow out of my notill pots:) id say anything organic you should hop on. even if its organic bottlesXD

Thats quite a high percentage of compost, while I don’t use mushroom compost, I usually keep the ratio about 1/3 organic soil 1/3 (peat pearlite) 1/3 compost when making a new soil mix. Compost is the basis of soil rejuvenation for my re-used years old base mix, but I have found a lot of inconsistencies in the past with bagged compost.

LOL hey give me another few years with all around balanced organic soil first eh? LOL you no-till guys are radical extremists! Just kidding, wish I had all the time and space to experiment, I’m just latching on to living cover. I have 4 composters going but I must say it is a nice luxury to have the north side of the property lined with hard maple trees. Makes a pile of leaves so massive. Even without shredding, it is incredible how fast that it is reduced to gold. I’ll see how the raspberries grow this year (they invaded the pile last year) so I guess I just may give a kind plant a chance, thanks for putting that out there lotus! Should I go seperate hole in the ground or in a buried pot or fabric bag? What do you think? Sorry Moog I’ll start a different thread on that if its a go.

I am also trying to get a compost pile going, and a grape vines to actually grow grapes this year. So, as you can see, i am ALL in…haha

By the way, for the girl this year outside, im taking a post hole digger…and filling with my mushroom mix, then planting dead center. Then dreasing it out about 3 feet. Atleast thats what im going to try this year.

It is snowing here again tonight, but the veggie garden gets its indoor start, Peppers first, were 8 weeks until guaranteed no frost. Might get another rotation in before then, indoors, for summer selection purposes, I timed things just about right for my outdoor plants this year. My composters are starting up and they already lost a 1/3rd volume from the pre-winter stuffing lol. Just chomping at the bit, and slowly synching the veg lights to solstice timing. I’m thinking about a 7 gallon fabric bag buried in the ground, full of leaf mulch, I grow a lot of veggies in pots and raised gardens, wifey goes nuts with flowers everywhere. OOPS think spring fever just took hold, where’s my gardening catalogue? I blame lotus710 and your magic mushroom mulch Moog, oh…and the herb, just waiting for the 420 crop to cure, I just took a wee bud really. lol

May plow 1/2 an acre up and grow all silver queen corn.

Snows gone was 70 F today, turned over the leaf/branch compost heap (before the thunderstorm) wifey doesn’t know why she can’t spread it in her garden he he he sorry got plans.

We must live in the same parts…lol exact weather here today, almost 80 actually.

Swung by the local mushroom farm and grabbed about a 1.5 yards of spent mushroom substrate haven’t used the stuff yet in my organic garden endeavors but was wondering about percentages to use with this stuff , I’m a 1/3 mix of SPM, vermiculite, and quality garden compost type of guy! Would 15% of mushroom be a good start ? A few pics of my grab! I did end up seiving about 5/6 wheelbarrows full this far and I’m not done yet probably another 4 or so to go<img src="/uploads/default/original/3X/9/1/91b3ddffe1c8327b2c5c9a5fa601bab3a7042744.jp
