Mushrooms - DIY, spores, etc 🍄 (Part 2)

I’m a big fan of 1000 little messes, too. So far I have 3 jars I’ve injected with spores over the weekend. I used my instant pot to steam sterilize the jars. I have a pressure canner but it’s huge and I was only trying to do a couple of jars. I have like, 9 of 12 jars of grain left from the last Lions mane batch I did.

I’m not opposed to grain to bulk, but I’m scared of mushrooms because I have a very light grasp on reality as it is, I don’t need help coming untethered. I’m not sure we would want that many?

It does ramp up fairly quickly, lol. Next thing you know you’re making Christmas wreaths with mushrooms.

I think that’s what my dad really wants for Christmas.

Spore prints! Spore prints on all the things!

I once saw a video clip of a woman wearing a hat that had 5-10 cubensis spore prints on the brim. She said it was so she could spread the spores around the parks when she went hiking  Years later I’m wondering ift that actually works… might have to start walking the trails more regularly!

Spore prints do make cool art. Not a bad idea!!

Getting started!

On August 13th I decided to grow mushrooms. Ordered from MMM.

On September 22nd, I harvested my first fruits from one of several brf cakes (the others are just now pinning). Maybe 3-4 grams dried so far, but it’s a start!

I’ve learned a lot and it’s been fun. If you have any interest and can follow directions, it’s not hard. Give it a try!

I’m super nervous to post on shroomery. I’ve been reading the guides, but can’t work up the stones to start a thread. I’m sure y’all will properly motivate me. Same UN over there, but just one biscuit. There must be a character max.

I’m going to dunk them Friday. I’m wondering what’s happening on top. The dry verm layer shifted or moved because I can see peeks of mycelium up top.

In culinary news, I’m going to move some tents around and get a Martha tent going for chicken if the woods. I’ve been holding onto a couple spore syringes and they aren’t getting any fresher. I’m going to put some on agar. I’ve never put mushrooms on agar. Just bacteria with kids (I’m a teacher). Plates seem like a super fun project.

Don’t be afraid of The Shroomery — it’s just another forum — I’m on there as xVadisx (not as active right now because I’m not growing mush for another month or two again).

Something did happen if you see myc growing above or in the verm layer — if you’re far enough along it won’t be a problem but watch it for contamination.

I’m new of course … but I found that as the BRF cakes colonized, they shrink up. That creates some space on the sides and the vermiculite on top, which is loose, drops down the sides. On some jars, the vermiculite was partially colonized too.

I’ve also found out that the Cannatrol works pretty good to dry them out after harvest. Good luck!

After harvest you want to dry them at the highest setting your dehydrator will go to — I really wouldn’t use a cannatrol— drying mushrooms is different than cannabis. You want them dry. All the way dry. Fast. I run them for 24hrs in an Excalibur at 165F. Every time. Then into glass jars with dry and dry packs.

I wouldn’t use a Cannatrol to dry weed, either, never mind shrooms. It’s just a rebranded wine fridge that costs four times as much as a regular wine fridge.

Yeah, I haven’t bought a dehydrator yet, waiting to see how this develops. If I keep it up I’m sure I will.

My meager harvests so far are actually being mostly dried on a rack in the output of my dehumidifier. Gets them dry fast then put them in the Cannatrol where they seem to hang out fine.

Just keep in mind that moisture and oxygen are the enemy for mushrooms. Both are best avoided if possible. When I crack a jar open the mushrooms should be able to powder between my fingers — anything else and they aren’t dry enough! Pulling all the oxygen as best as possible will help with potency retention.

I have a Cannatrol and love it, I don’t have experience with P. Cubensis, but I would never dry a culinary or medicinal mushroom in a Cannatrol either.

I dry my culinary shrooms in my air fryer on dehydrator mode or if I have a lot the oven like a mamaw.

I’d already harvested some big ones before I took the pic, but my first shoebox has come to fruition, so to speak. Ive still got lots of learning to do, but it’s a start!

is 165 kinda high? obviously its workin for you but that sounds kinda high to me. 120 gets the job done just fine. I’m always afraid of burning the psilocybin tho rationally I know 165 wont burn it…

Does anyone know what temp psilocybin does burn? I feel like knowing that would save me from a lot of paranoia

hell yea well done! beautiful first flush, I’ll never forget how happy I was on my first grow. it was the same feeling I got when I got my first NES for xmas.
shout out to link from the past :raised_hands: :star_struck:

Way higher than 165F. People deep fry their shrooms. Put them on pizza. Etc etc. 165 is getting you where you want to be fast and safe. You want cracker dry. Powder when squeezed dry. There are some good writeups on the actual degradation of psilocybin with heat but truly. 165F for 24hrs — it will work and will not hurt your shrooms. I’ve taken smaller ones out at 12-18hrs but now really just do everything for 24. They all came out very effective still, lol.
