My seedlings are dying

Hello folks

I been trying to grow plants for a months or two now seedlings are dying and all the time and, I dont know why.

Heres a pic:

Its in rock wool cube -amnesia haze.

It looks weak, couple of days old and i dont think its going to flourish.

What can i do? I water it, its under 250W MH lamp, with extractor fan. Set up is sound, yet seedlings are dying.

What shouldi do? Any help appreciated.

Let it dry out for awhile. Most common cause of “infant death” in seedlings is too much water, too little oxygen for the roots.

Just be patient, I recently had some seedlings stalled many days until they started to grow, now they are fine and healthy, yours don’t look bad at all … beer3|nullxnull

Sometimes when they are not growing on top they are growing on the bottom, rooting out. Seedling looks like its in good shape so far.

Are you using any nutrients?

Your wasting a lot of electric, for seedlings you only need a 10 watt at the wall, led light bulb at 12 inches away, I just use a desk lamp for the first 2 weeks.

As others have said, it looks good man, more patience and litfa is whats really needed, your killing them with kindness .

As mentioned above, overwatering is very common in newer growers. For the seedlings, you can get away with using a little clamp light or even desk lamp with a little CFL bulb. They dont require very much light to get going. Your little one doesnt look bad though. Just dont drown it, or put the MH light too close since it is a baby still.

Mine for example is a standard Daylight/6500k 23watt(100w equivalent on package) spiral/CFL bulb that I put in a round clamp light and does the job.
I’m sure there are other/even better alternatives, but I remember buying a 4 pack of these for my house for like 6 or 7 bucks years ago. Heres a picture for reference, the little thing on the right is an adapter that allows me to screw in an extra bulb if I wanted.

I like to have a light breeze on them too . I find it keeps the stems stronger

Ive had similar issues for about a year now. Lost some nice packs… i think ive found the culprit. Ill update in several days and if the issue persists or not. In the mean time here they are. 3 GG4 from BC Bud Depot. Popped after a 24 hour soak at 83-85 degree and planted in jiffy pellets then inside a candy container they go to secure moisture.

I was gonna say. Any reason you can’t use a solo cup and organic soil?
I always figured rockwool was more for clones.

Start it in soil, let it establish then if you really have to move it to ph balanced rockwool

I’d suggest using a seed starter soil mix. I made the mistake of planting seedlings straight into Fox Farms Ocean Forest and they got stunted for over 2 weeks…

Here’s the day I switched soils

This is a week later

I’m with @Midnight on this one, with sprouts less is more, dont try and push them untill they’re seedlings with two pairs of true leaves.

New grower here myself, and I did not know you could use just a regular ol cfl bulb for seedlings! Very cool!

I always wait till 4-6 points showing, before giving them food, myself.
Seeds carry a lot growing power.
I also keep some of my Sunshine Mix #4 set aside for seed cracking.
Zero nutes, is how I prefer to start my beans.

I use this stuff and the size of the stems of the seedlings i start in other soils is almost a joke compared to this. This soil is specifically designed for seeds next to nonexistent feed The only nutrients is a little silica thats it.I dont feed my seedlings until about 2 weeks they start to want a light feed.I only use this for seedlings nothing else.Try it out sometime its really good stuff

If you want to stick with the rockwool for starting seedlings, I’d use a little spray bottle to water them. That way you can ensure you don’t accidentally overwater.

You can also pick up the rockwool cube to feel its weight, to see if it needs water yet.

Are you planning to grow the seedlings out in a hydroponic system? Is that why you are starting in rockwool? Or do you plan to move it into soil?

I also recommend this, I use it myself. It retains moisture extremely well, a little too well for a beginner like me so just be aware of over watering if you go with this suggestion. Excellent seed starting mix

unfortanuately the problem had persisted. cant say too much nutes if im using jiffy pellets. i squeeze out some water so its not waterlogged, mist the container and give it heat + humidity. and under a CFL… idk why my seeds pop but fail to germinate. i’ve no idea what environmental factor is at play here. there was an episode on Scotty Real youtube channel for 2025 new year, he deleted the video. but his buddy had similar issue, where the plants will all pop, but never grow past the cotyledons. idk whats making it happen to me either, i periodically attempt to germ, and sometimes it’ll work other times it wont. ill try again at a different location and it if works i can pressume the issue is remote to this location, although that variable is still unknown. =[ damn im losing some good seeds! has anyone else had this issue? seeds pop, sprout, but die after cotyledons come out the seed shell
