Old school tricks for early plant sexing

I veg at 16/8.

I figure 16 hours of light is the maximum sun I get up here anyway so why the hell not?

I said 16/8 before and I corrected it to 8/16. 8 on, 16 off for flower.

With that much dark time, what kind of temperature, rh, medium is being used? In the 85% 65-85f environment here that sounds like a recipe for mold on top of mold.

50% RH here usually, no problems with mold. Lights on/off doesn’t matter with the correct environmental controls.

I am in the high desert/sub-alpine forest though.

I’m a soil grower exclusively.

So have you done this with clones on a side by side? Curious since I have 110°+ days in summer were the whole house gets up to 87° with the ac full blast so tent can get into 90’s with low rh. So that’s why I ask about a side by side with clones or how are you sure about the similar yield? Thanks

I didn’t do side by side but I’ve been growing the same strains for a long time, 6 or 7 years before I switched. I grew with the reduced light schedule for two and a half years. Like I said, I only switched back because of this one OG clone, and also I don’t have enough room to run so many things indoors.

It’s just my observations but I’ve been happy regardless.

I wish someone would do a true side by side because I think it works as long as you follow the veg schedule properly. The plants get used to doing more with less, I think that is why the 8 hours of light during flower works.

Joe Pietri claims the longer schedules turn plants into “light junkies”. His site has more interesting information, but I don’t like that guy at all really.

So you run your veg 12 on 1off so almost like a 26hr day. Then 8 on 16 off for the entirety of flower?

No. In this case, 12/1 means 12 on, 5.5 hours of darkness, 1 on, 5.5 hours of darkness. There just isn’t a better way to shorten it.

The 1 hour at night interrupts the dark period to reset phytochrome levels in the plant, preventing flower.

8/16 is just as it sounds, 8 on, 16 off.

@420noob how did sexing your plants go? Learn anything? Plants you thought were boys turn out to be girls and vice a versa?

A few ya a couple I held hoping didn’t have nuts but oh well. The grow is in my grow log and @OriginalDankmaster96 grow project you can see the results. Thanks for asking!

I just switch to 12/12 no matter how old they are. Once they are a plant. I have grown from seed on less than 12 hours of light. It was bud is all I can say. They get a growth spurt when you flip. If you’re worried about how tall.
I like some of the ideas up top.

I have read that before. A little too much work for me. I’m a basic grower. I do cut back hours not because he says so. I have known that about growing from day one.(not I have learned and lost) High Times was my biggest tool when I was a younger me. Maybe that was it. I have made several mistakes. Outside is a little more forgiving in my experience. Inside is a job.

Sorry also. I have learned a lot from you OG’s. I’m sorry I’m going to miss you this summer. Next year might be a winner.

I agree, and we should include DLI which is the amount of light a plant gets in a 24 hour period.
It is a good routine if it fits your style, not for me really either.

In my 2023 grow journal I made gender prediction for the DGR strain I am working on. The mixed gender plants went outside on June 1 and I pruned the apical tip at that point. On June 15 there were identifiable pre-flowers growing where I made the first structural prune and one node down.

Here’s a link to that post with some nice closeup photos:

My predictions in the middle of June turned out to be correct!

Here’s what I’m thinking of doing next year (at end of comment):

But I really like the idea @ramblinrose had earlier in this thread:
