Ya being in the dustiest part of the nation I gave it a go on my 2nd fall/winter harvest back in 21’ and it was a huge game changer, buds were smoother, green held longer and everything just felt cleaner and fresher taking whiffs from the jars, then top it off with the nasty buckets seeing what came off em and ill never look back, even for my indoor if its not a seed run which probably isnt necessary for most but again I’m in a dustbowl so it is for my area.
Ya it sucks, it IS a lot of extra work especially when your doing 10-15+ lbs a year but I took an entire grow season of caring for the plants already, why skip out on making them the best quality possible? Just the icing on the cake and the cherry on top for a quality smoke
In the video it was mentioned that he had a big problem. It seems to be the common theme with folks who wash. It’s dusty, bug problems etc…
So, I live on a lake, and get a fresh breeze on a balcony. Not much dust, and no bug issues (yet ) I’m just trying to see the benefit and I’m just not sold yet. I may wash a few branches to see what you all are talking about though.
I started rinsing my outdoor after trying to turn a couple plants into bubble hash. The first bag I pulled must’ve had about a qp in it, the problem with it is that it turned out to be fine silt, pure clay. I was sold after that, very dusty conditions here, I use water and hydrogen peroxide for the rinse. It makes all the difference.
In my experience, I’d say any trichome loss is probably comparable that of a couple rain showers.
I don’t wash every harvested plant but only because I’m lazy. Done properly, you’re only doing your future self a favor. That silver/rainbow sheen that is often seen on brackish/still water is what stands out to me. All the crap floating on the top also serves as a way to enlighten you to things you may have missed during the grow or to look out for if you plan to use the same area in the future.
I just did once the baking soda - lemon wash, first bucket was then full of nasty things , didn’t dry enough and my buds became dark later but flavour was good and smoking smooth, I recommend it …
What i will say is the guy in that video is being quite rough with his buds, that’s what’s gonna bang trichomes off in my opinion. I’d just be much gentler is all from that video and don’t think it’s necessary to leave it soaking that long, i wouldnt flick it either, just hang with a towel under it being gentle. That’s all I observed I don’t like on that process but pretty much is all ur doing
I absolutely wash all of my outdoor buds. Pounds and pounds of it, every year. It’s completely disgusting not to. If you aren’t you are smoking smog, bug pieces, any foliar leftovers, acid rain, dirt, debris and mold.
I have tried both ways with the same result. I start with a 5 gallon sterilite flat bin and add the following 1/2 c baking soda and the juice of 1 lemon (only use a real lemon) or 1/2 c of hydrogen peroxide aka H2O2 into water. Cut whole branches and soak for like 2 or 3 mins then dunk in a 5 gallon bucket of hot water then a 5 gallon bucket of cold. Then shake water off well. The most important part… Hang all the branches in front of a fan for a good 45 mins to an hour until they all stop dripping. Do not try to trim or dry bud if it is dripping wet, it will mold. Do not skip the fan!!!
Cannabis is not water soluble this is why you can make hash. Washing bud will not harm your trichs. If you wash it once properly, you will notice the black gunky water and never smoke dirty bud again. It tastes better, it’s safer and my bud comes out perfect. Never had a problem.
I washed the year before last. Heavy peroxide bucket, then 2 plain water. I wasn’t rough with them, but I swirled them around. Then I would swing them like you do a paint brush after washing it out, a sort of gentle whip of the branches to get most of the water off, then laid them all out in the sun for the rest of the day. We had perfect weather for that at the time.
Last year I didn’t harvest any smoke to speak of…it was mostly a breeding year for me, making some feminized seeds.
Will definitely wash this year…we’re having terrible weather to finish the crop on…nothing but rain, drizzle, fog, very high humidity. I go out and shake the plants when I can, but we’ll be getting rain almost every day this week…very NOT good. Keeping an eye out for any signs of bud root…neighbor lost a whole plant to it last week…wasn’t paying attention.
the first time i only washed off a little oil (did it wrong) second time got some dirt but not nearly as much as i was thinking. my issue is how do i dry it back to the proper level to then freeze it for “live” extraction. thats gonna take time and practice of course, and might not be as neccessary, but an interesting project nonetheless.
yes. i wash everything i grow outside and inside.
1 wash bucket, 2 rinse buckets. soak/agitate in the wash. dip 5 times rinse 1, dip 3 times rinse 2. hang to dry with fan/outside breeze for 1 hour, then dry/trim as you normally do. (i do dry trim).
you will be amazed at all the crap that comes out. even the inside plants. (fans blow dust around).
you don’t want to smoke that sh^t. get it to the gone. smoke clean ganj.
