Repotting for flowering?

This may be one of those things where somebody says: “Yeah, everyone does that. Don’t you?”

The idea: next photoperiod grow, say I pop a seed and want to veg it for 8 or 9 weeks before switching to flower.

If I’m going to re-pot at some point in veg, why don’t I make the last report around week 7 or so, right into a more bloom-nutrient soil mix?

In thinking this through, it will need recovery time before 12/12 flip; it might need SOME nitrogen for the first week or so, no?; also, I may lose benefit of the soils established fungal ecosystem, etc.

What am I not considering here?

I haven’t done it this way but I tend to throw them into their forever home pretty early. In theory though I think it’s a solid idea.i would definitely make sure it has nitrogen for at least a couple weeks of flower but yeah it makes sense to me.

The only reason I would repot in veg is if I can’t keep up with the watering. Watering twice a day is a pain in the ass.

I think recovery time is a bit of a myth, and is more likely due to overwatering. You can remedy this by soaking the recipient pots a few days earlier than you plan to transplant. And you can make it even easier on them if you do this:

I’m certainly no pro, but most “recovery time” periods I’ve seen has simply meant slightly slower growth for 24 - 48 hours. Instead of looking slightly bigger in the mornings, they look exactly the same. That’s all.

Here’s a follow up: when I re-pot, I usually make sure the old pot is on the drier side, so heavy clumps of soil don’t stick to the little roots and damage them. Should I make a point of transplanting a big, surrounding chunk of soil, too? Or could I/should I gently wash or rinse away most of the clinging soil before repotting? That seems a bit traumatic. . .

I don’t get them in there early (although I am with the current autos I’m running, for obvious reasons). But this run made me think a lot of soil and the 3D nature of a fabric pot, and how I might exploit it, with layering and holes, etc. (More on that here: Bud Sweetman's Barn: Four Autos in the Portland Sunshine - #17 by navy66 )

So it was a natural idea for me to think, why don’t I just repot into a bloom mixture and finish the veg by top dressing very lightly with a “fast” N?

I’ll go check your thread too, but what nutes are you using currently? I switched to Gaia green last grow half way through. I still have my liquid nutes and I’ve been known to give a little booster with them at times.

sorry for late reply. In terms of what I’m using:

I relied on a bit of bat guano, worm castings, blood meal, and urine in veg; a few days before flowering, I added Dr. Earth Bud and Bloom Booster, some bone meal, sulfate of potash, and diatomaceous earth, and I’m continuing nitrogen for now, too.

I never used much – very small amounts top-dressed on. I was sensitive to over-feeding these autos.

The original soil was roughly 1/3 perlite, 1/3 Ocean Forest, and 1/3 potting soil amended with myco.

FYI, I think I’ll likely try Gaia Green next, using these other things as supplements as needed only.

Anything thoughts? You’re much better at this than I am. All of you are. lol
