I’m trying to find information from those who reuse their hydroton.
I was thinking of first rinsing and then letting it sit in some hydroguard so that can break down any organic matter. This way seems the easiest. I’d hate to boil as I don’t have a big enough pot for the amount I use.
Trying to reduce my waste and be a more responsible grower
I reuse mine. I dump them into a bucket and fill with boiling water from a kettle. Obviously it takes a few fills of the kettle. I allow it to sit until water is cool enough to put my hands in. I drain. Allow it to dry out in the bucket and just reuse. I do keep a close eye on the ph when I reuse it though.
What colonoscopy said. Just rinse it and reuse it. If you are concerned about disease vectors you can let it bake in the sun all day or something like that. I imagine that would reset it all pretty good. But the handful of times in my life where I reused my hydroton, I barely cleaned anything. Just gave it a coarse rinse, removed obvious jumbles of old plant roots, and just immediately used it again without ever drying it.
That’s what my mates done in his IWS for the past maybe 5 years. Quick rinse. Let it dry and go again. He’s still on his original bag of Canna clay pebbles
You’re welcome. Just know if me and @Esrgood4u@Ghandisflipflop jump on a thread. You’ll get a dash of information and an unlimited amount of nonsensical fuckery
See how much better your crops do without you being able to be there to fuck about as much (that’s from personal experience btw)
Awaiting ghandis “I clean mine by jizzing in me old crusty sock and bash each pebble for half hour like pet”
Yeah they definitely like some LITFA, but not the don’t pH or top off for weeks kind of LITFA I’ve been giving them.
All my RDWCs are pH controlled with a doser, but my LP aero that I start all my seeds and clones in is all manual. This is where they suffer. Got some yellow seedlings I needed to transfer like 2 weeks ago. Between 60hr weeks and stressmas I’ve just been too tired to do anything when I get home.
Hell, I dont even rinse them… I flush mine for a 3-5 days when I flush so thats as good as its gonna get. I also run a live reservoir so any and all beneficial fungi/bacteria I want to keep. Normally all I do is just remove the main root bulk and anything else I see and can grab; then just let them dry until the next cycle.
I use peroxide when flashing orchids. Sterilizes the seeds for months in a closed petri dish so they can grow without bacteria. Better for organics than bleach (9:1) or harsh chemicals. Rinsing works as you don’t need a completely sterile closed system.
