So the first 15 beans I popped are 1/3 the way thru flower and I never dealt a this popping my first ones…
Today I noticed my seedlings starting to have burnt/yellow tips.
The only difference I have is my room is about 10* warmer and that I moved from bottled water to tap water. I know from my current run that my water out the tap has a high of like 8.2. I’m growing in coco loco so I’ve done nutes then ph to 6.1 for current grow.
Am I right in suspecting my switch from bottled water for seedlings to water right out the tap is causing my issues? Should I just PH my tap down to 6.1 on the seedlings too? Anyone know what PH Kirkland bottled water is? I don’t have any in hand to test. Thanks for all pointers
I was here first @George but waited for your reply…LOL
I agree it is probably PH.
Could it be a reused soil/coco that is too high in K?
Or maybe the soil has gotten a bit acidic and the PH of 8 is bringing it up to 6-7.
A runoff test may help know more.
Right Shag, could be any or all… and with stressing the plant this early on, if you have more seeds I’d highly recommend starting over. Why, the first week of a plants life can decide everything. Tap root slows down it’s growth can stunt a plant early on affecting it later. Hermie issues can raise it’s ugly head to as a response to young stress. just my thoughts, and trust me, been there.
Fresh coco, not reused. Kirland PH is similar to my tap. What about overwatering? I think I overwatered pretty bad on this run to start… Maybe I need to start misting them and not pouring water into the solo cups? I just get worried getting the water on leaves if I spray…
I’ll move to PH’ing the seedling water out to 6.1 like all my other trees. @Carty I can always pop more if need be but I’ll let a few of these run there course a few more days then drop a few more…
When I am in solo cup I only mist it is also a good idea to pick them up once you put you soil in them to get familiar with what the weight feel like it is a good way to check as well.
Was the new coco buffered? I’m a LOS coco guy, I’ve always buffered and rinse the shit out of it until the ppm was around 200. I have roughly 350 gallons atm in a 4x8 fabric bed.
To me this definitely looks like pH. Try adding a healthy pinch of worm shit to each and water that in. Get some organic acids in there to help chelate nutes and buffer pH.
Avoid misting them, if you need to raise RH there other ways. Let that substrate dry back in-between watering. Its helpful to maintain consistency with seedlings and watering.
If your coco dominant without any organic matter you want to treat it like hydro and shoot for a 5.8 pH, otherwise with organic matter you now treat it like soil and shoot for 6.2.
Your running tap water? Be mindful of accumulated bicarbonate. A simple acid will help to neutralize the alkalinity of the bicarbonate and free up the bound mineral, Calcium and Magnesium. Rice vinegar, white/apple cider vinegar, LAB serum or fermented fruit vinegar. Dilute at 1:200 for the vinegar acid or
1:50 Lactic Acid
Not sure what coco buffered means. I did what I did in past grow just popped seeds and buried in some coco loco, just didn’t use bottle water this time. Also think I started out overwatered as even top of soil was turning green in one spot
I didn’t notice the “loco” , I thought you had pure coco. Most coco is full of sodium even if it says it’s been rinsed. And the buffering aspect… coco purchased in pressed block form more often than not needs to be buffered with calcium nitrate and Magnesium nitrate. This satisfy the coco with cal/mag so it doesn’t rob it from your plants. Nitrogennis highly soluble and can easily be leached out of any medium, which is why I use it to buffer with. Leave the cal mag, not the N.
Yes it is, BUT that doesn’t mean you won’t have issues. Its always worth keeping an eye on, even if you add 1ml/L of a liquid bottled additive every other watering. It’s better to get the cal mag in a nitrate carrier than to add bicarbonate forms that can bind up.
Also even if your using bottled water, and it has a alkaline pH, they added minerals for taste. Plus drinking distilled water or 0ppm water isn’t good for humans as water is the most power solvent on the planet and it will actually remove minerals from our bodies. My advise would be if you don’t have an RoDi purification system, just purchase vapor distilled water. 0ppm water adds nothing that can accumulate and takes the predominant pH of its surroundings. As long as your soil is healthy and active with microbial life, organic matter, you should not mess with its natural pH fluctuations, hence the 0ppm water.
Given that these are autos, @Carty probably has it right. Run them out if you want to deal with them, but I wouldn’t expect a whole lot out of them. They will recover but will likely be stunted when they kick into flower, especially that Mango Smile
Lemon/ lime does work to lower a solutions innital pH and helps but unfortunately it just doesn’t stick around long enough in the media to make a lasting impact.
