Hey just was wondering if anyone ever heard of wrapping steel wool around the stalk of their plant to keep slugs away? A co worker/friend that also grows told me about this trick and claims it works… just wondering if anyone else heard of this or tried it? I picked a slug out of one of my early skunk plants last night and need to put a stop to it…
I think it will work, I"ve had luck using coarse, shredded cedar bark mulch around pots, they have trouble with the sharp edges. they like living in aged bark mulch though.
Right now I"m trying copper tape around the containers and it seems to be working, it’s early though, only 2 weeks into it. You could also fold copper tape onto itself and stick it in the ground like a mini-wall around the base.
I use Diatomea’s earth aroud the pots, it cuts and dehidrates them, but also heard about nude copper cable wrapped aroud, haven’t tested yet …
Heard it works but never needed to try. (Knock on wood)
The damn bugs this year in Canada have been intense.
Steel wool and slugs
pretty sure that’s a shotgun video on youtube…
Last year i used it with mixed results. Some leaf damage continued after putting rings of copper scrubbers around the base. But because they were guerrilla spots i couldn’t tell if it was bugs or slugs. I however didn’t see any more “slimy” leaves so it should help. Also had a pretty ruthless spider come into the patch and eat all the bugs shortly after so I’m unsure which one had the greater effect Like @Muleskinner said they don’t like the hard edges. D.e is great but if it gets wet it becomes ineffective… So if you can apply frequently and tend the plants you’ll have good odds if you use both of them together
here the slugs like to eat the seedlings, then when I germinate I leave a glass with beer almost full they fall there and die.
Was actually thinking about putting some almost empty beer cans around there was well
beer works well, I always do it after losing 8 neroli 91 a night a day for the slugs.
