Keeping outdoor weed clean?

Hello all,

I am having some issues with my outdoor plants.

I have several plants growing outside on the roof in small containers filled with coco coir. The rooftop area is quite windy, and since I’m growing autoflowers, as soon as the top layer of soil dries out, the growing medium gets blown out of the containers. Initially, I didn’t consider it a big issue, but now it’s polluting my buds, and I dont wanna smoke fertilized coco haha!

I have since added a layer of hydroton, as can be seen in the pic, but it doesn’t seem to be sufficient :(.

Any outdoor maestros out here with a tip?

Thanks,
eS :tropical_drink:

I would cover them with landscaping fabric/weed barrier, just cut a square out of the roll a little bigger than the top, cut a single slit in it to slide the stem through and duct tape it in place. You can water through the fabric too. It would also keep the coco from drying out too fast.

You can wash your bud at harvest.

Or make bubble hash which is similarly a wash.

Great shout, cheers, Im pretty sure I still have some of that stuff too, so I’ll go and give that a shot.

@Foreigner
Do you mean I can wash the buds with water after harvesting or something else?

I have indeed thought about making bubble hasj from the buds, but I currently dont have a big supply of flower, and I really prefer smoking that over hasj personally.

Thanks ya’ll!

I always wash my lower branches in the shower. They get all kinds of dirt and splatter from rain. Just rinse em off real good with cold water. Doesn’t seem to do too much damage but you can indeed wash them.

Yes at harvest I mean.

I am not personally a bud washer but it’s something like lemon water, baking soda water, clean water. It would be wise to double check though.

No worries brother, if you think about it, its no different than a good rain storm. Don’t use full pressure and kind of shake the residual water off but they’ll drip for a while either way after you hang them. Glad to help and happy growing!

You can also spray them with light intensity water hose. I’ve done that to knock off all the spider mites. It has to be at just the right pressure though to not knock off buds/trichs or break stems. In the future you could use something like a plastic bin with a fold over lid.

Yeah I agree with the guys up above on the washing after harvest, as an outdoor grower myself it’s a must. (Dirt, dead insects, etc)

Cocoa is talking about washing while it grows. Which I also recommend! Spray em down and shake em out. Just shake them really really well if there are flowers. I’m constantly washing mine

Well I wouldn’t call it a wash per se but I do mist my plants every now and then, sometimes with a hydrogen peroxide mix. I’ll turn the mist to a full stream beam if I see something that needs to be knocked off right away.

I wash all my outdoor with water and peroxide mix. Lots of dirt comes off.

You want the water 50-70, too cold you’ll wind up making hash :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks to everyone for the super helpful tips!

Just gave my flowering plants a proper rinsing, shook them dry, ill have a look tomorrow !

I also realized I still had a couple of pot covers from my fabric pots, so I dug those up, and look at that;

Elastic hair nets?

I was going to suggest cling-film, but it looks like you’ve gone one better than that.

a lot of people wash their outdoor grown buds. after a season of growth your plan is covered in bugs and bug shit, bird shit, dust and dirt could even have powdery mildew you do not see. i use to think it was kinda crazy but tried it out and was amazed at all the shit that come off the buds when washed.
there are a lot of online videos of how to wash buds. also a few different wash formulas but all are basically the same.
if you are a smoker the buds taste better/cleaner, too without all the dust , dirt and crap on them.

cypress mulch.

reflects the light
keeps the roots cool
traps more moisture in the buckets so they don’t dry out as fast
heavy enough to stay put in high winds
cheap and plentiful
don’t screw too much with soil PH like colored mulches

edit:
or the stuff you ended up using. lol

Still a good tip, cheers!

I think your technique is more useful for bigger containers than I am using currently :innocent:

Just put 1 cm sand on top of your pots.
