Got a question I never really thought to ask.
Does anyone monitor the temp of the rooters in their clone dome ? I always go by the temp in the cloner with a Inkbird combo hygrometer/thermometer, actually a couple of them one on rack at bottom one on rooter container and sometimes one taped to the inside of the cover that I can see externally.
My cloning efforts of late have really sucked for a a couple reasons and I think mainly due to over complicating it with using dipngrow and clonex gel and myko powder all on each cut. Plus the clonex jar I have is at least 4 years old. No dates or batch on it and I got a new jar that has some kind of lot or batch numbers on it and I need to figure out the dates.
I also was going to ask if anyone uses a lazer thermometer to check the temps of rooters ??
Anyway I usually start cuts on a heated mat depending on temps and up until a couple months back have had near 100% success even though I start small cuts since I have bonsai moms which I also have neglected badly over the last couple months. Been kind of distracted elsewhere but anyway I need to reboot and these cuts of Cuban Black are about 6 days out and back to the old school methods.
My only current change is Im trying side by side of Rapid Rooters vs some new Flora Flex Cubes. Clonex gel RO water and about 3ml per gallon of Clonex cloning solution to soak rooters in and thats all. Right this moment my temps are mid 70’s and the rooters are 74F. These are for next grow which should hit my tent in first week of July and I have a space to up pot into 5" bonsai containers and or 1 gallon bags if I go that route. 5 gallon bags to transplant to in tent which is always a good grow.
I don’t get too obsessed over temps but I do use a small temp/hygrometer gauge to measure and keep an eye on things. Same thing with me though, I always had pretty good success with it but then this year my clone “luck” went downhill. I’ve recently realized it had to do with a crap batch of jiffy pots. I’m really looking for a way to up my clone game though but am too cheap to spring for one of those fancy turbo cloners or something… I feel like it would be an easy DIY job. I like your little dome with the rack on the bottom. Looks like a solid set up.
I also really strongly believe it also has to do with the health of your Moms. I also slacked a little on taking proper care of them and took cuts that didn’t root well. So honestly, my number one piece of advice for you would be to make sure your moms are thriving when you take cuts!
I have an IR temp Gage but hardly ever use it. Last time I looked my clones were in 84°F and one time my temp controller died and my temps got up to 114°F and my clones looked awful but were showing roots in 3 days …I don’t suggest that high a temp, it was stressful. As mentioned by others here, the speed at which your clones root is dependent on the state of your moms. If your moms are stunted and barely growing you can expect 2+ weeks before roots (if they root at all!) whereas cuts from a healthy fast-growing mom can root in 6-9days. Plus, smaller clones take longer to root in general. I am re-re-mentioning this because you stated how you had neglected your moms for a few months and feel that may be the issue.
