Yes, the single line is important for high wattage devices, I think you’re staying plenty safe with a 400w heater, that is what I use. One thing they also told me, which may not be universal, is that most code requires 20 amp circuits to be setup on a single duplex or quad box with a dedicated supply line to the panel.
Yes. I’m on one with a 10 g wire. I was gonna set it up for 220 never have. But I may go back to hps.
Seems like folks old enough to have come up on HPS and MH might have had to learn this one the hard way or at least heard enough horror stories from people that did to be aware and careful. I just worry that folks who start off thinking about lower wattages with LEDs will miss that crucial part of growing safety once they start adding in big powerful things like a space heater.
I just googled it and they are available in a few places I like the USA made better but they’re 2x’s the price
Fire balls are cheap. I’m not in my home. I do have fire protection. It doesn’t take much. I do agree. Those are safe a thing about it it doesn’t really mess anything up. The water ones make a little damage. But they were a little pricier
Local building/electrical codes vary, but this is not really the case for the national electric code. How many duplex/quad outlets you can install on a given circuit is all based on what will be powered by that circuit. We just had our kitchen remodeled, and I had conversations with both the electricians and the local inspector because I had some concerns over where/how wire was run and what would be powered via each circuit. For example, you can’t install more than one duplex outlet per 20A circuit that will power a dishwasher, disposal unit, or microwave, but you can install multiple duplex outlets on a 20A circuit that may run several small kitchen appliances. As you mentioned, it’s all based on what will be running simultaneously on that circuit.
I literally just bought an extinguisher yesterday for the basement. Are these the fire balls in question:
Should probably have one in each tent
@Pigeonman @LegsMahoney I really like the idea of fireball extinguishers too, they were pretty common in NYC in some older buildings and service areas, and my boat friends talk about them. Besides the automatic aspect of them, which is the most interesting, I also like this idea that you can, in an emergency, toss it into a fire you can’t get close enough to with an extinguisher. West Marine has the Elide brand in stock, the 4" covers 19 square feet, so good enough for a 4x4’:
Pretty sure those are exactly what people are talking about. I think @ReikoX also has them in his grow space, IIRC.
Thanks all. I’m in so it seems tmy issue is supply up here.
There’s also this guy that based on the cubic foot capacity should work for folks running a 3x3 or smaller:
Jogoswall Automatic Fire Extinguisher,Fire Extinguisher Car,Small Fire Extinguisher,0.24lbs,Car Fire Extinguisher, clean agent fire extinguishers (CAR,SUV,TRUCK) Amazon.com
Could probably use more than one for a larger space, not sure on the actual physical size of those balls but these things seem tiny for the size of coverage area they provide
I see Elide has a Canadian distributor (www.elidefire.ca) but they are out of stock. Hmm, I’ll dig around a little and see what I can find you Canadians. One thing to note is that Elide invented the modern version of these balls and has sued AliBaba for marketing ineffective AFO branded knockoffs before so be careful about the brand you choose:
It looks like Elide USA is stocked up and fine with sending Canada Post but with the usual tariff and customs shenanigans…
Thanks Smacky, that was the nuance I missed in describing that. I think the kitchen stuff was where I went “you guys know what’s best” after describing what sort of appliances we use (not many), and spent most of my time worrying about my grow power. I know that we have an especially strict electrical code in most New England states compared to nationally, they did say something like that. I think it’s because our housing stock tends to be much older than most regions in the US, combined with how common running both space heaters and AC units here is
Those are them. For the price they are worth the piece of mind. They have a new Death Star one I’ve been eyeing.
A cursory look at YouTube shows great efficacy of the Elide brand fire balls, the AFO not so much, looks like you get what you pay for since the Elide ones are double the price at $95 for the 4” version
I just watched this one: https://youtu.be/UxlDmZDlMug
TBH I only need one so I’m gonna get the Elide 4" soon, $100 for peace of mind is well worth it to me, especially in an old dry wood house.
TBH, the only video comparisons I’ve seen are ones put out by Elide, so I’d take them with a grain of salt…kinda like the Pepsi challenge where they found that the Pepsi guys would purposely let Coke go a little flat.
The AFO ball used for the comparison appears to be the AFO 0.5kg ball, while the Elide appears to be the Elide 1.1kg ball. I’d expect the larger ball, with more fire suppression powder included, to be more effective at putting out large fires like what’s shown in the comparison video.
I saw a couple videos from some independent folks that showed the AFO not really putting out the test fire, lots of potential variables that could be at play, but reason enough I believe to raise an eyebrow IMO
