Tinytuttles 2020 grow chronicles

I’m going to save seeds for next maybe I could send you some if you like. Baker creek is kinda of expensive but they do have quite a selection of lesser know heirloom varieties.

Those are extrely good looking tomatoes. I’m not huge on the super sweet ones however. I’ve never had brandywine. I think from what I’ve heard all the heirloom varieties taster. Better than the newer hybrids. Any good yielding heirlooms that you know of? Great yielding heirlooms have not been my experience.

Heirlooms are far superior to hybrids in flavor it’s not uncommon to get 1 lb brandy wine for weight

Heirloom varieties are harder to grow and Don’t yeild near as well but they make up for it in the taste. Lucid gems did really well last year but we didn’t have any more and couldn’t find any in stock might try next year.

The heat has been brutal here for a week or more. Natural plants are dying back some. The tomatoes slowed to a crawl and the pot plants are hanging tough but it’s been tough on them too. I’m giving lots of silica to the plants this year and it aids in stressful times as well as strengthen cell walls for lots of benefits.

Man, I like that Brads Atomic. I wanted a sweet variety to make salsa. I grew a really sweet red variety in the 90’s and it yielded so much all summer. It was in the Appalachians though where the dirt is gold.

But, it made the best salsa. I was growing peppers, too and I called it “sweet fire”. It was like candy. I had planned on canning some but me and my neighbor s ate it all as soon as it was made. We were smoking lots of the best pot I’d ever grown, too.

Those a Purple Cherokee are supposed to be real finicky to grow in some areas. Lots of reviews like that discouraged me but for me it ended up with the best harvest at my house last year. Super big tomatoes that had such a dreamy taste. I’ll plan better next year.

I’d agree that Cherokee purple is probably my second fav for flav… keep cool buddy everything is dying up here mostly from the lack of the wife watering her container plants!

We haven’t got a tomato off ours yet. First mites, then heat, more mites. Add a few in a batch, and it changes the entire flavor by a bunch! We were shocked. I’m sure their may be better ones out there, but that’s the best tomato I’ve had. Anything home grown is way better though of course.

I was just curious if there was a higher yielding variety of heirloom. We’ve only gotten maybe 20 or 30 in our best years.

I’d say 20 lbs per plant or so would be considered decent amount in anybody’s book From my understanding the foreign countries who do hydro do well over 100 IIRCC of course they train them up in trellis for 15-20 feet high also and in greenhouses

I doubt we hit that poundage. Some of them were small. Small but freaking tasty. It’s making my mout water just thinking about them.

We’re supposed to cool off on Friday and Saturday. I hope we get some rain and wind to move this smoke away. Not as bad as some places. That hot weather just stalls the plant growth like crazy.

Well pull a couple more males out of the 1 gallons and taking my last solo cup plant out of the competition it did finally show as female today so I replace the 1 gallon with it bummer that the Apollo was a male I was looking for trying that one

Boy, did we cool off. 52º last two mornings. Rain the last three days for a portion of the day. Windy and cool right now at around 62. Seems like we’re always in some extreme. Not many normal days, just too hot, too dry, or too wet and too cold, all in the same week. but, alas, I lumber on. Buds be the journey. Man, your girls look nice. Mine are started flowering but not that far along. Probably close.

I’m estimating I might be a good 1.5-2 Weeks ahead of last years it might have do with the the offspring of last years plants … I’m pretty impressed think it has a lot to do with my training and defoliation and removing larf

It looks like we have relief for the next week plus. It should be good weather to pack some weight on the ladies. In a week or so we are gonna hit 70!! I’m ready for a break from the heat for sure.

Beautiful looking colas @Tinytuttle. They are some of the bigger ones on here. I have found through experience if I want a photoperiod plant to mature sooner you gotta start them early. I found I can save 2 or even 3 weeks on flowering times by starting indoors first week of March

Just wanna pic your brain for a sec. @Tinytuttle. What’s the difference between a compost tea and a EWC tea? Also I feel like I need to give my organic plants a boost right now. Any recipes or anything on that?

Its the same. Ewc means earth worm castings. Just another form of compost
