Uh oh, I’m in trouble lol
Looks like an onion/seedcorn maggot
The insect can be scaled in comparison to the serration on the leaf in the picture. It is not a soldier beetle. It may be a soldier fly. @Hippiechik is correct about fly ID:
Counting wing vein bifurcations is VERY difficult.
It looks like a fly to me.
‘WOW’ that looks real technical, don’t think I would be smoking and try to figure this one out at the same time.
looks like a cabbage fly to me
It’s absolutely NOT a beetle. It’s a fly.
that’s it!
Thanks everybody for the overwhelming amount of replies!
What do i do they will go on sticky traps but i hate killing rove beetles…
i do IPM with beauveria bassiana, Venerate and Dr Zymes, the flies are chillllling in it tho
LOL Looking at fly wings under a compound microscope was a great time to be stoned. One afternoon in the entomology lab after many hours of counting wing veins, I had a soldier fly under the scope. I broke into song and substituted fly for boy.
The picture below that @herojuana.tom posted shows an identifier for fly species. It looks like a single trichome appearing between the wing and its left rear leg. That is called a haltere and it is only found on flies. It acts as a counter weight to dampen the vibrations created by the wings.
@supershitfuck Not sure what bug it is but I will say I tried just about everything to try to get rid of fungus gnats for years. Different Things helped to varying degrees but there was still always some around.
Then I tried this stuff and it got rid of them.
Just sprinkle it over your growing medium if you think that’s where they are breeding.
Hopefully it will work for those pesky buggers.
If all bugs on Earth would die then we would die as humans as well, everything would collapse.
Flies are a symptom of overwatering.
If you’re growing hydro, good luck.
If you’re growing in natural soil then stop watering, use fabric pots and water them from the bottom.
Companion crops make eco systems more robust against draught, indoor as well as outdoor.
Maybe I’m dating myself with the starship troopers poster
I agree, and take steps in my veggie garden to promote a happy balance.
But who wants to pick flies out of their buds?
They can get trapped in the trichomes and are a headache. Doubtful that the insect itself will damage the plants, though.
yeah about 100 other pictures but this is the absolute best one, i left my camera home dammit the one on my phone sucks!
it’s not that… that’s what i ignorantly call a potato bug lol
i’m in downtown los angeles… the dryest place haha
haha right? nah they are just annoying and the population is growing…
i think that’s what imma do! (i have thrips too)
i listened to that song, it’s cool!
thanks for all the replies everybody, super appreciated, good to be reminded that the people of overgrow are awesome, so it doesn’t look like i have a “fly problem” but who wants intruders all over the plants, i kinda just always have bugs and i don’t do much about it, i have predators, everything is alright, i’m not the “eradicate and sanitize everything” type
So PYRETHRIN it is, it’s made out of daisy flowers? sounds awesome, i hate chemicals, i’m going to look into this
also… i have crickets all over my shop they are loud as hell… what could scare those away?
Even pyrethrin can burn the leaves of your plants.
Like @Hippiechik said, it is clearly in the order of true flies - Diptera. Once anyone is going to other orders like Coleoptera or Hemiptera, please ignore their advice.
You may end up with more real troubles if you spray. Just my humble opinion…
Not all flies are the same. Some are predators.
Robber Flies
Try a shop vac with a floor attachment to capture them.
Good eye, @herojuana.tom!
didn’t want to kill any rove beetles, but i said fuck it and put more sticky traps out, then i swatted the rest of 'em, it worked really good, i only have like 5 flies remaining, and i have five hundred billion rove beetles still alive in my soil
whatever those flies are, they reproduce quick!
