Using stills to make RSO and brewing alcohol to make EverClear from scratch

That’s a really good point about the scrubbies.
There’s cheap stuff (at the dollar stores etc.) that are bad to use.

I’ve been using this stuff:

It’s nice stuff to work with. I’m always worried Lee Valley will drop the product so I order the 100ft roll, I use about 60 feet & I have enough ‘left overs’ to pack the column a couple times now. From what I gather (chatting up the staff) packing still columns is the primary use for their product…

My favorite new recipe for eggnog this year.
1 oz of ‘high test’
1 oz of Kahlua
top up with eggnog of your choice

I can’t get Woods Old Navy Rum anymore and this is a good substitution

Cheers

when you say cut off the first 30-50 ml are you using this figure in regards to a certain amount of wash? Is there a certain ratio in regards to the amount of wash that is being heated? I have in the past heard something like a ounce for every gal of mash. If this is true I would personally cut off 2 per as well as keep a eye on the temp to know when it was in the range where ethanol vaporizes. Not trying to be crappy, was just wondering if someone read this and applied it in a large setup like say a 20 gallon boiler if they would have removed all of the methanol with 30-50ml. I know one thing hangovers suck and the thought of going blind really blows

It is. My cousins and I took a distilling class. Got so drunk all i remember is add the maple after lol

When using a half keg as a boiler,( 17 gallons mash maybe?) the amount of methanol produced is pretty damn low unless you are working with apples, which produce more methanol,( and a worse hsngover)
We used to throw out the first pint or so to be safe, but it turns out we threw out too much. Going off an old memory here but seem to recall that methanol is produced between 165 and 175 degrees as the still heats up, so throw out what you collect in that temperature range. ( and double check my memory, but this info will get you on the right track) By 178 degrees its the good stuff😁

I can only get 4 liters of mash in my still at a time and I throw out the first 50ml to be safe. It doesn’t get wasted, I keep it for sterilizing my shroom equipment, or put it in my tiki light I use in the summer when I run an almost sealed room to make extra co2.

Stone fruit (peaches etc) produce the most methanol… but it’s not a serious problem…
You know what they give you at the hospital for methanol poisoning?

… Ethanol… :vulcan_salute:
but yeah… hangover!!

Correct. I was always told the same thing, about an ounce (30ml), or two, per gallon. The nice part is, if you want to be more “cautious” you are only cutting into the start of the Heads, which you wouldn’t use any way (unless to throw into the Feints jar).

If I am doing stripping runs, I take only Fore Shots from each, and then, during the Spirit Run, I will take a bit, at the beginning, just to be sure. Can’t hurt. I will usually do about 5 gallon runs and take about just under a cup from each, then a few ounces from the Spirit.

Also, in most cases, you are not going to produce enough methanol to go blind. The problem is in how much you drink, alcohol wise, not the level produced. You are right, though, even a small amount will give you a wicked hangover, think the next day after drinking a bottle (or two) of wine.

BTW… Welcome. We are glad to have you here.

That looks a lot like the stuff I got, but more for less (I paid almost that much for about half as much). Will have to check them out

LOL, I know a distributor (for distillation supplies) in Ottawa Canada and that’s his source as well.
There’s no markings on the box to give any hints where Lee Valley is getting it from either… :vulcan_salute:
If you are in the US, Lee Valley has a US mail order operation operating out of Reno Nevada.

Yeah, I saw that and have bookmarked it already for when I need some (though if you use the 551 method to clean it, it lasts a long time)

Hairdryer works too.

How fast does a hair dryer take to do the job roughly.

Too many variables. Quicker than double boiling.

That’s good, I will give it a go next time, I have a heat gun, might use that on a low setting it will be faster than a hair dryer :+1:

I make green dragon and deck by the gallons, if theirs one thing I know……it’s how to make killer green dragon and feco…… let me try and find a video I made this past harvest……I decarb in my ardent fx, then pop in blender with 190 proof ever clear……then I let it be in freezer for 1 month take it it out every morning and shake my jars then back in the box they go……… I then strain with 220u,160u,73u,25u in that order…….then I take everyrhibg in screens and stuff in 25u dab press bags and 1 by fucking one….I press them in my 6 ton to get every last drop…… then I let sit in 2x2 tent with air purifier an exhaust outside no fan on it the trick is to get the water to evaporate faster than alcohol or you’ll be left with a mess

As alcohol evaporates at a lower temp than water that is a very clever trick, I would like to see how you do it :+1:

Maybe heat the water up first? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

5 gallons wash started today using Birdwatcher’s Tomato Paste Wash. Sugar Wash Recipe..

You do want to try to keep the heat down on it I always use it on low temp and high fan heat guns don’t do that.

OK thanks knowing my luck I will burn the wife’s hairdryer out leaving it running for an hour lol.

Reminds me of after my daughter was born, she had to have some kind of noise going on or she would not sleep.

She would go off to sleep every time the vacume cleaner or hairdryer went on near her. So I would turn the wife’s hairdryer on and hang it on her cot.

Went through 2 hairdryers before I thought of making a tape recording of the hairdryer and played it on loop
