Weird tap root issue

I think this is the answer to the question.
Cold storage is a must for seeds in my opinion. In a tub/jar with some form of desiccant to keep moisture out.

So they can sprout but are “damaged”?
@SonsOfAvery

They look similar to seedlings I’ve lost to soil fungi like phytophthora. I usually see some brown parts on the root, but the pinched off look at the end and lack of root hairs match.

My guess would be your grow medium is contaminated or else lacking in a"good" biome you had before that kept it in check.

I grow in “living” soil and have the best luck with adding beneficial soil microbes directly to the seed water at first. If I try to keep things sterile I inevitably fail and then lose a bunch to various rot / fungi. If I just “go with the flow” I lose about 20%, and if I use mature soil or add the beneficials right away I lose almost none.

If you don’t want to add beneficial microbes, I’d suggest rinsing your seeds in something that will sanitize them, dipping your pots and tools in bleach water, opening a new pack of paper towels, and baking your soil.

I used H2O2,soaked the seeds and added a Little on the First watering.Passed It into the tweezers and also on the seeds during germination multiple times.I use Coco for the Major part with salt nutrients.Weird enough I Ve never had this,could be that fungus?
Yes,the pointy tip becomes Brown and the tap root hard to the touch,Is It the same for you?

Yeah, that looks like it. Common term is “Damping Off” and I just went on a little Google search knowledge refresher, and was reminded it’s caused by any of several soil pathogens. Here’s an image search that has a similar image at the top.

I’m sorry I don’t have any photos of my dead ones. I’ve got some home cross NOID seed, I’ll try and grow some infected seedlings soon to photo for the future. :wink:

Oh man, sorry to hear about this @Andrexl, what a bummer. Did you pre-rinse your perlite? I might consider that your media is too moist from some of the pics but not all of them. Zooming into a couple of the pics, I do see extremely small branches coming off the tiny roots… it looks like root hairs are starting to form. Your roots aren’t brown nor discolored so they appear healthy, visually, and the pic posted above the microscope pic shows a fresh white root tip forming. I do not see visible signs of rhizoctonia.

I dont know for certain what is causing this stunting but I do feel that some pics look too wet, although that shouldn’t completely stunt them :thinking: To remediate that I might blow through the top of the cup to force some of the water out so that the media is a little drier and use a drop of bleach in a cup of water to spray them with to kill off any unwanted fungi, if they suddenly start growing that would definitely clarify whether there is a deleterious fungus in your media… I would spray them with the bleach water first and then blow out the excess water to keep them as dry as possible, I literally put the cup up to my mouth, try to make a tight seal with my hands on either side of the cups mouth, and then blow until no more liquid pours out the bottom … that is what I consider “dry enough”. After that, I would give them a couple days to dry out more before watering them with bleach water again.
