What was your first computer and what did you do in the early computer years.

well, if we are going to go there, let me check how many little piggies I got left?

regards,

That so awesomeā€¦ was in a IT class in high school. We hid Duke nuke em on the school server and would play during class when tea her wasnā€™t paying attention.

I had a leg up over others my age because my dad was writing databases back in the 70s. He had equipment at home and I learned to type on a computer instead of a typewriter. I took a Commodore 64 and printer to college. Most of my peers had typewriters or used the computer lab on campus. When I mentioned that I communicated with my dad via email, they would ask what that was and if I had to pay postage or long-distance call charges

From the C64 I moved to a Mac SE, then a Windows 3.1 machine. I worked at a store that sold software - back when you had to drive to a brick and mortar location to buy apps - and remember the Win95 launch party.

My degree has nothing to do with IT so I got certified by Microsoft for Networking Essentials, NT Server 4.0, and Windows 98 to get my foot in the door of that world. Iā€™m still here 20+ years later.

I loved them both, Active Directory was a bit of a curve when it come out love it now

after 20 years

so much easier to test a Group Policy instead of implementing it and hoping it works

the shit I have hosed is unreal

but since most folks have no clue what we do it so easy to smoke and mirror them

talk some techno babble and their eyes glaze over

are we evil? we are Gods on our Networks does it go to our heads?

I thought networking was complicated when I was learning itā€¦ until I lucked into a chance conversation with Ron Harris. He was the original network guy for Bloomberg Communications who was tasked with getting overseas market information back to the company as quickly as possible. That was before TCP/IP existed!!! It was hard enough for me to learn how it worked so I canā€™t imagine having to create your own digital packet conveyance system where no framework existed.

Ron was one of the 10 original employees of Bloomberg. Since the company was so successful he was able to retire early and pursue his interests. I met him through dog training He was into Schutzhund (a German working dog sport similar to how police canines are trained), as was my now-ex, and we ended up at his farm/ranch in western VA for a weekend seminar. Funny how things happen sometimesā€¦

Gateway with a 2GB HD which was A LOT back then.

I was 10 or 11. I remember staying up until 4AM playing Neopets and then running to bed to pretend I was sleeping for 10 minutes before my dad woke me up for fishing.

Then i got into actual PC gaming around 13 or 14 with Half Life mods

My ex did AKC obedience as a young girl with her Sheltie, but got into Schutzhund in a big way when she switched to GSDs. She trained her own dogs - probably putting in 40 hours per week on top of her regular job - taking them to training, seminars and competitions every weekend. She brought several dogs to the US National finals as a ā€œHOTā€ competitor (Handler-Owner Trained, sometimes people buy pre-trained dogs and hire a pro to show them at tournaments). All ours were from East German lines.

American shepherds were trash due to the AKC conformation standard of a sloped back which results in hip and elbow dysplasia. In a way, the division of Germany was a good thing since the breedā€™s genetics were preserved as they should be, with a strong back for working. The Western world screwed that up!

This dog used to sleep in my bed. Such a sweetieā€¦ but theyā€™re all business when itā€™s time to work.

Sorry for the hijack!!!

Early token release! Woo hoo.

PC/3270 emulation card frenzy days. Terminal emulation drove me nuts.

We had an in-house Unisys A15 mainframe. Remote ibm mainframes. Had to do both types of emulation concurrently. PIA.

Microsoft Mail on Netware 3.12. Eventually converted to Exchange.

Hereā€™s a good oneā€¦ I worked in a large tool & die/plastic mold shop back in the early computer days, and we needed to transfer files back and forth between the QC department, and shipping department. So I ran a phone line between the two departments and hooked up modems to both computers. I had to connect a 9 volt battery on the phone line to get the signal. Brought up a terminal program on both ends. Typed ATS on one, and ATA on the other. They would connect and we could transfer files back and forth, My first experience with networking hahahaā€¦
