it’s an epic fantasy series by robert jordan spanning 14 novels, consisting of 11,898 pages (paperback) and 4.41 million words. the author actually died before it was finished so the last 3 novels were completed by brandon sanderson.
imo this series is way better than the lord of the rings books and possibly even better than the game of thrones book series. i’ve read the entire series multiple times.
the TV rights were recently acquired by Sony and Amazon struck a deal with them to develop it for prime streaming. production began autumn of 2019. hopefully amazon hires a talented director who does the books justice. i’m so excited, altho there’s no way they can manage to depict all of the complex storylines and nuances from the books, they will undoubtedly have to cut a lot of material, so i strongly recommend reading the books.
i’ve started reading it again for the 5th or 6th time in preparation
all the ebooks seem to be available here altho i would recommend buying them
The first book in the series (The Eye of The World) is absolutely fantastic.
I enjoyed it more than any of the Game of Thrones books, actually the first 4 books in the
Wheel of Time series are better than any Game of Thrones books, IMO.
I have to admit however, that I sort of lost interest in Wheel of Time after the 6th book.
I may have to go back and re start Jordan’s series, I read them in the early ‘90s.
I recently re-read the LOTR trilogy, and I enjoyed it even more the 2nd time.
I also thought that the first of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant trilogies. by Stephen R. Donaldson was superior to Game of Thrones. Lord Foul’s Bane is really very good.
I liked the Game of Thrones series, but I thought the books were better.
I usually prefer the books over any resultant series or movie inspired by the book version.
I am looking forward to seeing how they render Wheel of Time on Amazon.
I read probably the first six or so years ago . I also read The Thomas Covenate Trilogies . I liked both . I just hope they don’t screw up doing Robert Jordans books like they did with Terry Brooks Sword of Shannara TV series . That series was terrible and didn’t do the books justice .
I haven’t read in a long time (wife hates it cause I get lost in them) but the wheel of time series is one of my favorites I’ve ever read. One of my exes turned me onto it years ago. I’ve read the series 3 or 4 times. Another one of my favorite series is the Sanctuary series by Robert J Crane. It’s a bit lesser known, and maybe a bit more young adult than the Wheel of Time, but worth looking into.
LOTR and The Hobbit - loved them.
There is a little known short parody by Harvard Lampoon called Bored of the Rings that is an absolute hoot to read - especially stoned.
The names were fantastic!
What stuck to me over all these years was the description of the shire… “like a dragon had a series of disappointing bowl movements”…
Definitely could be worse things for me to be doing lol. Probably should clarify a bit. The wife and I had some troubles for awhile, and even separated for a few months, but during the time leading up to the separation I was gaming and reading almost all of my free time and not giving her any attention. I was in a rough point mentally (new twins, finances falling apart, etc.) and was basically using it to escape my demons by focusing on something else, but it also meant I was neglecting her at the same time. Soooo… now it’s an issue if I get hooked on a book.
it’s true robert jordan was very, ummmm, long winded a lot of the time… he’ll spend 3 pages describing the inside of a room or something, some of it can be pretty dull at times. but overall i loved the depth of the storylines and the characters. the first time reading through i could barely put it down.
i watched the first 2 seasons of GoT then gave it up for the book series which was way more enjoyable. lol once i was bored at home and took a couple hits of acid and read Game of Thrones, and was peaking right when i got to the Red Wedding… jesus!!
sword of shannara was great, sword of truth was also a decent series. i used to read any and all fantasy books i could get my hands on, i’ve forgotten a lot of them
brandon sanderson, who completed the last 3 Wheel of Time novels, has some good novels as well, i started reading the stormlight archive series and was enjoying it but stopped for some reason. i think i’ll start that one back up.
thats my hope as well. Amazon has enough money to do it properly but i’m not sure how much they’re investing in it, as they’re also adapting a Ringworld series, ian banks Culture series, Conan the Barbarian, and also a Lord of the Rings tv series with a reported 1 billion dollar budget… so here’s hoping they give WoT the attention it deserves!!
Amazon has hired the principal costume designer from GoT for the WoT series
I tried not to, (do not want to hijack thread) but find myself compelled to mention my very favorite fantasy series.
Jack Vance is one of my favorite writers. Mostly sci fi, but he also wrote a great fantasy
series which I really enjoyed.
Strongly recommended.
