So after a zillion popups, YouTube finally blocked my browser until I either give them
money, or allow them to spam with a quadzillion ads – many of them in the middle of the content.
Then I discovered a trick… all you have to do is log out of YouTube.
This will allow you to watch videos again at your leisure.
Eventually they will start harassing you again, even though you are a guest.
Reboot your computer, and try again.
This restriction has something to do with active session data that’s stored locally.
What do the geeks out there think?
Sidenote:
Yeah it’s a lot of effort to save a few bucks, but this is personal. Why have so many companies forgotten how much the average internet user hates popups?
This started in the 90s and popups were in separate windows. I bought a product called “popup cop” for $50 that blocked them… for a while.
I watch youtube a ton everyday and I’d rather not use it ever again if it meant having to sit through their ads. I recently started getting the warnings too even though I’ve been using an ad blocker for a long time. They recently started rolling out this with certain accounts this year.
There’s no way I’d pay them to get rid of ads. They’re overkill and super intrusive. Honestly a lot of websites are near unusable because there’s THAT many ads.
Nobody likes adds, but the option is to pay.
Developers, content creators, etc … Have the bad habit to eat, and to eat all days.
Youtube has to maintain servers, and also pay content creators. If you find that useful, why do you reject to see adds or to pay?
It is like the android apps … Everybody likes one or other, but no ones likes to pay for them or see ads , then the people that spend the time developing that what earns? Nothing?
Youtube makes their money off subscriptions and ads. I too got very frustrated with having to meet the Chopra’s every few minutes so I signed up for their premium subscription and haven’t looked back. I am happy to pay for their platform since it allows me to be ad free. It’s a toss up really, one has to pay for their service one way or another. Since my time wasted on commercials is worth way more the the tiny subscription fee, I just pay it, and am happy to.
the business model went from product sales, and then upgrades
to a subscription model
for basically everything…
that is simply not sustainable - how many streaming services does one need ?
I bought the records, bought the tapes, then the CD’s. I figure that I’ve paid for the music I consume many times over ; no way I’d pay $ 10 / month for it now
You’re not paying for the music, your paying for the platform it’s posted on. YouTube didn’t make anything off your purchases. I have 3 streaming services. YouTube, Netflix and Paramount which is accessed through my Amazon Prime Video which comes free with my Amazon account. Anything more I need, I have Kodi for. Still way, way less than I used to pay for cable which was about half commercials when I cut that cord.
You can download yt-dlp and just download them. It’s what I do. It’s not as simple as downloading an .exe, you have to follow a step by step guide to use the console command, but it makes life a million times easier.
Not at all, I had internet when I had cable. I did not substitute it. I have been in IT for decades, internet is a necessity for me one way or another. Not accessing OG without it either.
