2020 Cannabis with Meesh

lol …surprised it still exists

Last years harvest was epic! I have an entire giant plastic tote thing full of vacuum sealed bud still. Of course, I’ve moved on to smoking this years harvest, but I recently gave a bunch of the old bud away to a cancer patient and some to my lady grower friend in the desert to make creams and such with. I should probably figure out how to make hash. lol

I think alot of the pollen chuckers (like me) live with the “what if?” … ive got no reason to make seeds, ill never be a breeder. Hell I don’t even have enough room to even think about it. But what if I cross these 2 plants and end up with something deadly… or bird seed. I started trying to make seeds on my first grow cause you tube told me I can spray this on that and end up with a bunch of seeds. Being cheap and seedless that sounded like a sweet ass deal. Now because of overgrow I have more strains than ill ever grow AND a damn addiction to making seeds… “just incase” lol

Hell i still have a clone of all but 1 photo period of each strain ive grown because “what if I want to grow it again” even though I have more seeds

Here’s the thing though, if somehow you did make some fire… what if it’s just a few phenos out of 1000’s. You may have made a lot, but what if you go to grow more out and all you get is shit in 99 out of 100? I’m assuming random pollen chucks are gonna give you so much diversity that whatever you intended can’t be replicated that easily unless you spend years and years fine tuning. I don’t know much, but Im assuming this as the major breeders don’t just pollen chuck and sell resulting seeds. They work them and work them and work them right??

Oh I agree with you. Maybe I have s God complex lol. The big question is… will I ever actually grow out the seeds I made. So far, no. I lose interest and try a new strain lol but if the apocalypse ever happens ill have all the weed I need

just taking the other side of this …if you have a mom there is no guarantee you will keep it alive. Seeds from a mom give you a chance to remake those special ones.

Taking the other side is great. That’s why I brought up this topic. So we can all see other sides and have a lively discussion.

What always cracks me up though… for example let’s say Bodhi strains as he is so popular… People search high and low for his strains right? Well, I see a lot of posts that will say… I didn’t make any straight f2’s that said person was looking for but I have it crossed with whatever that I can give you. A lot of people would say Why the hell would I want that? It’s not the real deal. Why not make pure seeds when given the chance? I can see chucking, but why only chucking to another strain? Especially a rare or hard to find strain? Hence preservation.

my opinion of that scenario would be as harsh as yours…clearly what were they thinking?!?

Theres a lot to cover here & I’m baked so we’re not going to sum it all up here  but a few IME/IMOs:

first-i-ly, a person making & selling seeds has to assume that the seeds will be used & crossed & duplicated. :man_shrugging: so the shrewd things to do is to make/maintain inbred varieties, select mothers & fathers & collect pollen over time, NEVEREVER release them(your private stock), “outcross” them to other unrelated genes(yours or others’), producing unique F1 hybrids which are then either sold or worked further themselves and then sold.

So only a naive seed-merchant can be butt-hurt about what is already beyond their control. If they don’t understand the firstly part, then that’s just life/business/reality(harsh). :pensive:

As far as what should & shouldn’t be done as a home-grower it’s all gravy to try & experiment & learn by doing(the only way). It’s just like growing in that advice goes a long way but you still need to try & fail & all that. The “rule of 10000”. Or something.

To the originalish question of ‘are OG seedruns truly preserving a strain?’ I’d say a qualified YES but. Most of us are somewhere between beginner & whoknows so there’s no master work going on per se, but in the case of strains that were/are abandoned by their creator, we’re doing something pretty cool.

To truly inbreed takes more time(yo-mama joke?) than most greedy people jumping in the Green :moneybag: Rush and I believe making fine Cannabis seeds is a lifelong journey & breeders/growers pass on the torch to each new generation.

Tangentally, a number of OG 1.0 members went on to become successful & reknowned. We’re likely spawning some with 2.0

Another side note to consider is the availabilty of seeds hasn’t always been easy or affordable, & to the most needy people a free pack of seeds is a huge helping hand. Indeed the experience of the Cannabis community’s willingness to help people has been personally life changing.

So… Is an F2 seedrun passed out online preserving something? No, not in the sense that is spraying a special clone with silver & making an S1/“Selfie”, growing & phenohunting through 5+ generations of selective inbreeding & then having a 99% copy of your “elite” baby mama. So much work when it could just as easily be cloned or nowadays, preserved virtually forever in tissue-culture bits & pieces. :microscope:

MMmmm. yeah. got the munchies bad now gotta go.

So it’s just best to make polyhybrids?

I’m no expert, but aren’t most strains polyhybrids these days?

I think so yes. I prefer genetics from here though. Anybody can cross 2 different strains

Whenever I encounter a great female, I like to pollinated it. I cannot keep mothers around for long periods of time, so it feels like a sort of preservation, even if it’s not ideal. If I have pollen from a great male of the same strain, I’ll use it. I will also use pollen from great males of other strains, just to see what comes of it.

That’s one reason I rarely pop all of my seeds of a new strain at once: I have very limited space, so I try to leave the door open for a future preservation run if I find any females from the first run, or just to try again in the future.

Some of the best cannabis I’ve ever smoked has come from the results of my pollen chucks, and I enjoy it, so… :grinning:

Talk about polyhybrids… this chick (my friend in the desert) must have given me like 4 or 5 GG4 variants. Holy panic attacks y’all. These indicas are killing me! One of the strains is called Respect 4 Gorilla. Whoa! It tastes amazing, this tropical herbal skunky taste that I just over smoke. It’s a joint you cant set down, just cuz the flavor is so enjoyable, but more than a few hits and I cant swallow, feel like Im gonna swallow my tongue and in full panic mode. WAY too much body high for me. Couch lock central. Fear, panic and paranoia when Meesh is on couch lock bud. Y’all want a take you down indica, try respect 4 gorilla

I’m testing out some GG4 x SFV today. Not as couch lock as the former Respect 4 but probably not my best fit. Taste is more hashy and chem like, not even close to as tasty as the Respect 4. So far no panic attack with this one, but I’m not comfortable either. I’m gonna need to give the men most of the GG strains she gave me, I think.

I like that one a lot, but I’ve got others I liked a lot more, personally. If I ever start growing again, maybe one of these days I’ll be able to send a taster or two
