The sun is out and the snow is melting

Plants are getting big, I guess I should light proof my intake and exhaust vents as they will need to be flipped asap. The test plant has recovered now its been up potted and looking good. temps have been a steady 75F Rh has been 65% since the last big watering of 2.5 liters.

I am impressed at the strength and stockiness of the stems for young plants, the plants are lifting the stakes out of the soil.

They will get a bit of thinning out removing the leaves and branches that are growing on the bottom side of the stems, and flip them this coming weekend before they get to tall.

Update time, Plants going well, I super cropped them on Wednesday and cracked all the stems low down, no signs of stress being caused so that’s good. They have been at 75F and between 45 and 50% RH, I moved them out of the house and into the workshop on Thursday and gave the big pot 2.5 liters of water and the tester plant got a liter.

I have bent them outwards and have lain the tester plant through the open middle part of the big pot. I am not going to bother with the net now unless it becomes a battle to keep them laying over but they have been behaving so far.

Looks like there is plenty on nutrients in the soil atm so I am not going to add anything for the flower stage and see how they get on. I will be flipping them to 12/12 tonight, so fingers crossed they should finish somewhere around the middle of June.

The party cups have Big Bang in for friends outside grows this year. I am going to make a cardboard box grow cab for them later today, and keep them in the basement bathroom where its a bit warmer, so they dont get stressed with the 12/12 light shift.

3 days from flipping to 12 /12 and rapid growth has started, I have increased the light strength a bit as the plants are lower from the super cropping and not getting as much with the drop in light hours, it’s about 75% atm and will be full strength by this coming Sunday provided I dont see any problems. Then I will lower it as they grow taller if required.

The tester plant has what looks like a sunflower for a companion, damn squirrels burying their sunflower seeds in my compost worm bin again lol.

Bets in for cat box!

Yes it’s a cat litter box they sell cheap in the dollar store and the only thing a 10 gal pot will fit in.

I did put the small pot in a washing up bowl yesterday though, when I post an update later you will see it lol. I have about 6 washing up bowls and 4 cat litter trays, it’s easier now to just put the big pots in a garbage bag in the flower room, but inside my little seedling cabinet the bowls are easier :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Check out the plastics section of Dollarama, they often have huge stainless steel trays in the round @ $4 a pop i’ve been buying and using for all my large plants! I think it’s about 14" across.

Yeah they are 14 inches, checked them out last year when I first saw them, unfortunately the 10 gal pots are 16 inches across the bottom :slightly_frowning_face:

It seems even on amazon anything over 14 inches seems to jump to around $25 plus each, for a plastic pot stand, and I am not willing to pay that when I can get a litter box for $4 lol.

I got these for my “portable grove” plants for winter:

They work “stupid” well with these risers:

It’s NO $4 litter box but at least it’s NOT a $25 piece of plastic!

Thanks man, I bookmarked them for future purchasing.

It’s a great place (Astral grow) and my only hope is shipping from T.dot to Halifax won’t be McBrutal.

I just have to buy 20 and its free shipping lol.

Weedly update.

Starting week 3 of flowering. They are doing well atm, not sure how long it will last. I watered them on Saturday, checked the water PH after adding some OACV, and it settled on 6.27 for about 4 minutes so went and watered the plants. Then fed the birds and squirrels while I was out in the workshop.

Came in and switched the PH meter back on accidentally, when I picked it up to empty the contents of the cap that holds the water, and dry the end off before putting it away, it then read 5.42 ffs. It looks like the tester plant has started to have a lock out, and the leaves lower down are getting lighter with brown spots on.

The plants in the big pot dont seem to affected yet, but they got 5 liters of water so it will probably be close to another 5 days before I can add any more water to them again and try and correct the imbalance.

Temps and RH still behaving well, the plants may need a net as they are shooting up the side branches fast now, we will see what happens soon I guess, Cheers.

They look healthy. May sound stupid to most but since the roots are growing more sideways are you finding it’s keeping the height of the plant down??
Hey I’m still learning even now after all these years. :v:

The roots are going everywhere just like normal, but as the pot is wide and low I guess they are more side ways than down.

I have not seen any evidence to suggest a low and wide pot helps keep them shorter, other than the pot not being tall.

Since I cracked the stems low down the trunk and bent them over, they still keep wanting to stand up taller I just have to keep bending them back.

I was hoping the increase in light would reduce the stretch, but as this is my first time reaching the flowering period with these, I am starting to think, growing them in a confined space is going to be more of a challenge lol

The people who have grown them outside last year said, they got to between 8ft and 10ft tall.

When I grew out the Big Nosed Kate, they nearly doubled their height in flower, so did the Big Bang as well, so they both still have a big stretch in their combination together as one strain :slightly_frowning_face:

Keep bending, keep tuckin’. The struggle will be real but you’ll benefit hardcore by the end

If you drill holes or eyelets into the top lip of the litterboxes rim you can wire down those tops.

I was thinking about that yesterday, the pots being fabric are easier to just push a bit of wire through, but the main stems are keeping low it’s the side branches that are getting taller. I will need to crack and bend some of them, as it will look like a maniac cats cradle on steroids, trying to tie them all down lol.

I am trying not to stress them too much as they switch into flower mode, I think they should be safe enough for another week before I have to get abusive with them  I find its usually weeks 3 to 5 that the real stretch occurs :slightly_frowning_face:

Start the lst early and you’ll get it wide and flat

Update

Plants are looking a little pale but they will get watered again today, the big pot is mostly moist from 3 inches down and the small pot is about right for watering. Ambient temps are up and so is the RH but the cab is still stable atm around 75F and 65% Humidity.

Some leaves are droopy as I bent and cracked some of the lower branches yesterday, although 2 are back to their original height this morning, she will learn to respect my authority lol. The red cup in the middle of the big pot is to keep the tester plant off the soil surface.

The light is now maxed out, so I need to keep an eye on them not getting burned for the next few days.

Seedlings for outside friends grows are coming on in my cardboard grow box, now moved into the utility room where the furnace is so its warm and toasty in there for them.

150w equivalent with 3 bulbs 2 @ 5000K and a small full spec one.

Their might me some more seedlings to add as they are taking some time to hatch out and there are another 6 seeds in the paper towel atm.

Cheers. and Happy 4.20 Day :+1:
