I haven’t even harvested the first time yet, yet I feel I know so much I want to change.
What I plan-
1 Veg tent 3x3x6 (4) 5 gallon pots and a DIY led, haven’t worked out the details fully but it looks like 20 of the 2’ EB-2s. This is my current tent, and it doesn’t seem like fun flowering in here with my HPS, tempted to upgrade to led ASAP.
1 Flower tent 2x4x8 with two pots, thinking keep at 5 gallons. This would be lit with a HPS ducted hood I have already. Question would be… is this overkill? I know I want 4 in veg, and 2 in flower, size I’m not so sure on. Will pot size determine (partly) plant height? Do I want as much soil as possible in there? I could put two 35 gallon pots in the flower tent but that’s a lot of dirt.
This is all organic, working to ideally having living soil to be the ultimate water only soil. I am told a few worms can live in at least a 5 gal pot. Is true?
Sorry for so many questions; I look around the net and get conflicting and confusing information. Never sure who to trust! My bullshit radar isn’t calibrated to my new hobby yet.
A lot of the members here can be trusted 100%. They won’t tell you wrong. Check out some grow logs. I dont grow in a tent or with leds to say, xcept leds for cloning. So i cant really answer your questions. But there’s a thread or 2 on about anything you can think of. Best of luck to your new setup.
7 would be a bit large for me, and would make it hard to utilize my existing tent… that said, I wouldn’t mind buying a third tent that much.
HPS I have 600w and 1000w. Temps are around 70-72F lights on, 62-65F lights off. Working on stabilizing that so it stays a bit warmer at night, but still. I had luck with a space heater in the tent but no room.
You should be good with 5 gal pots. How big are you wanting them? 2x5gals will fill a 2x4 tent easily. You scrogging them ? Id net em n weave em to fill every corner. And i would run your hps in flower. Cooled hood too go for it. Theyll love the light.
Pot size will determine overall plant size. Height can be controlled to go sideways. Amount of light will also limit unwanted stretch. More light less reach.
I veg in 1 gallon pots until they show sex at around 6 weeks. I then flower them out in 3 gallons pots and I can fit 4 plants.
I also like to veg more plants than I need so I could do regular seed.
So off the top of my head you could do 9 1 gallon pots in a 3x3 and go from there. You could do a ton of veg time and go to 2 5 gallons but that’s a lot of veg.
I used to do 5 gallon pots but don’t anymore.
The details are up to you. I can’t say much about organic as I don’t do it that way.
I would screen them, yeah, really let each plant fill out the 2sqft.
Honestly on size I’m almost certain to get a yield enough off one plant every few weeks, just growing for me right now. So as long as they stay out of the light, I don’t care!
@Foreigner Why’d you forgo the extra earth? I’ll be transferring some ~6-8 week olds in 1 gals now to 3 for flower- I like your brain, man. Alright.
I’m thinking, if I’m getting two tents, fuck it and upgrade the 3x3 to a 4x4. 3x3 is a little cramped, would still maintain a 3x3 canopy area, extra space for whatever.
I like these numbers, they work in my head easily. Good stuff.
Yeah if you arent planning on long veg and big trained plants 3 gallons are good. 30 day veg 3 gal. Over 30 day veg 5 gallons. I found with my 30- day vegs 5 gallons were not being rooted fully. Wasting soil and space.
I had to find a balance between how much standing water I’m comfortable with with how often I want to water them.
I used to go big pots because of not wanting to water so often to being less comfortable with soggy feet.
For me it works best when the plant and pot are the right size for each other. Like the plant is about as tall as the pot or however your eye likes to see it.
I want to water every 3 days and this is about right.
I could also get one of those two compartment 4x8s, and only use X amount of area… Its slightly cheaper that way. I can also use the space for, you know, think other than weed.
Anyone have issues with two compartment tents? Worth the $50-$100 extra to just buy two? I have about a 10x10 area reserved, space is no issue.
Ok, well, that’s the “grow” part. Now for the “room”.
Cheap ways to put up a bit of insulation with no walls? I mostly need the lung room for humidity smoothing- my cool mist humidifier drops the temps 5*F, is this normal maybe? It is mostly only a problem because of my monitoring software freaking out, it really needs to have a night mode. I’ve had my bulb not come on, which consequently supercooled the tent, so a low temp alarm is useful. There is the potential the basement is actually, now in December, getting to be that cold. I have to check the heat registers down there once lights come on.
But my current plan is stud walls, and the Mylar bubble wrap or black poly, panda maybe. If I could avoid putting up stud walls that’d be a major cost saver. As I’ve mentioned I’m working with an unfinished basement, in a section with only 1 stud wall. This room is just a buffer between the dark, climate controlled basement, and the tent.
That’s what I was leaning to, just an air box to act as a better lung room. Working with something rigid has its appeals, as I can avoid studs.
Would there really be concern of light leakage through 2” foam sealed up with aluminum tape? Especially if everything is also hit with paint? (Reader beware- don’t spray paint your foam).
Well, we’re dealing with no sunlight by any means. The only lights to cause issue are device lights, and maybe the accidental overhead light turn on.
I happen to have a large bottle of India ink I used to dye XPS panels black for a project. I wonder how much the nice black surface would aid it’s light blocking. Thanks for the heads up though I never would’ve guessed. Curiously, what kind did you get? (Pink, white, blue?)
