For me the slow ones end up being about 75% female.
I’ve come around to the conclusion that slow males should be pitched, unless there is something outstanding about them.
I believe they increase the flowering time of their progeny.
The idea occurred to me when I was working an old IBL and I noticed that both the females and the males were in total ‘lock-step’ in early flower (and other characteristics like height)
Typically (non IBL) you see some early males going into flower before the females, some during and some later. As a reproductive strategy, ‘early’ makes sense as they are trying to be first and dominate the ‘genetics lottery’ but that only works well when there is some variance to the female’s flowering time. It’s just one of the physical attributes you can judge a male on.
Another thing I do is to discard the tallest males. If they are putting that much effort into making ‘wood’… that’s not a trait I want to pass on. (credit to DJ Short)…
The conventional wisdom is for later flowering males not the early ones
I generally wanted the early males to speed up flowering time. Glad someone else sees it the same way!
Dang hope the females are good ones! You’ll have a nice genetic mix either way with that many males in the mix. Could weed out any males that don’t seem up to par as well.
