Apollo 11 Genius F4 Open Pollination by Bodhi - Preservation

Ok it is definitely time for me to temper my expectations on this one.

7 confirmed males
1 confirmed female
3 have not shown sex yet

I took clones off the 1 female and the 3 unknown and the nicest 1 male.

My hope is since some of these havent shown sex they are females, but not holding my breath.

For me the slow ones end up being about 75% female.
I’ve come around to the conclusion that slow males should be pitched, unless there is something outstanding about them.

I believe they increase the flowering time of their progeny.
The idea occurred to me when I was working an old IBL and I noticed that both the females and the males were in total ‘lock-step’ in early flower (and other characteristics like height)

Typically (non IBL) you see some early males going into flower before the females, some during and some later. As a reproductive strategy, ‘early’ makes sense as they are trying to be first and dominate the ‘genetics lottery’ but that only works well when there is some variance to the female’s flowering time. It’s just one of the physical attributes you can judge a male on.

Another thing I do is to discard the tallest males. If they are putting that much effort into making ‘wood’… that’s not a trait I want to pass on. (credit to DJ Short)… :+1:

The conventional wisdom is for later flowering males not the early ones
I generally wanted the early males to speed up flowering time. Glad someone else sees it the same way!

its this fact that made me ask why as if i remember it had something to do with recessive drug trait

Exactly!
I think it is a characteristic that can be used to ‘fine tune’ the next generation, maybe for a specific environment.
Long term testing…

It’s interesting trying to come outside from being inside for so long. Especially in more north climates

I had 4/4 beautiful, vigorous dudes from my initial attempt at Pagoda. Was so sad when they all popped nuts :weary:

Edit!!

So the last 3 have shown.

Final count is:

8 males
3 females

Sometime this week i will make a list with pics of each plant.

I took clones of all females and some males for future use.

Well didnt get all 3 to be female but you did get 1 more at least. Should be a decent amount of beans. Good luck with your grow.

Dang hope the females are good ones! You’ll have a nice genetic mix either way with that many males in the mix. Could weed out any males that don’t seem up to par as well.

The last male to show sex may be that sacrifice!

Any reason aside from the late showing? I always read that males that show late are preferred vs early ones.

Half joking out of frustration. I likely wont cull any of these, it is an open pollination after all.
