Bodhi Seeds - Goji OG Crowd Source F2 Preservation (closed)

I hear you and I just want to reiterate that I never once said that this was a genetic issue. I believe this to be an error on my part. I don’t want anyone to be nervous about running these F2 seeds that will be eventually given out. The cause of my issue was more than likely a light leak from an adjacent room through the tent air vent, something that never affected any of my previous grows for over 2 years. This has led me to believe that these genetics may just be sensitive to light stress.

Bottom line is that I do not believe there is something wrong with these genetics.

I’ll play devils advocate here and say that maybe it was a disguised blessing that this happened? If plants are quick to herm under such slight conditions as described by @NorthNorthNugs then maybe it’s best that they are ultimately removed from the genetic pool? What were really looking for are plants that are stable under a range of conditions right? Not ones that need 100% dialed conditions to perform. Just raising the point for the purposes of conversation. Discuss :joy:

Ya man, I fully agree! I had plans to stress test these plants after this run anyway and now I’m just one step ahead.

They looked just fine when I took them out. I did a gentle wash first. It just seems they always look wilty before the perk up and decide to take off. :crossed_fingers:

didn’t know that about goji but I believe you. It was just so odd. Again it sucks it happened. Has happened to me too. I was just sad and wanted to try to help. Didn’t mean to offend if I did.

Sorry for jumping to genetics unfairly. You are right I jumped to genetics. (I was high and maybe misread? idk) Sorry it happened it can really hurt. It happened to me on my tk bx i know it sucks.

All good!! I just wanted to get this thing back on the rails. Sometimes ppl miss fine details in the threads and I didn’t want anyone to think I was blaming weak genetics.

From the data I’ve gathered so far, it points towards this:
If the plant grows pollen sacks within the first 15 days, it’s a natural process that will happen every time to that plant.
There are three different types of pollen sack growth:

  1. in the first 2 weeks(genetic)
  2. stress induced during bloom(not genetic)
  3. random pollen sacks during bloom that always happen(genetic)

Yah, and males of course  the nutty plants are XX XY chromosome like humans. Thanks for telling your experiences!

I had this happen to me when I was buying from Attitude seed bank around 2015. I had a $800 order and NONE of the seeds came in the original breeders pack. Needless to say, I was so disappointed in the seeds that I stopped buying from the seed breeders when it was the fault of the seed bank. I was still getting good packs of Kandy Kush from DNA/RP, but that seed run ruined it for me. For all that I know, Kandy Kush was never affected by whatever happened to OG#18(2012) because I was getting good seeds of it in 2014+.

I disagree for two reasons:

  1. Almost all of the legendary breeding block strains that are in everything these days are known to herm. Chem, OG, and Cookies all are known to herm if conditions are right. If anything, rather than people asking that they be removed from the genepool, strains with this lineage are increasing in popularity all the time. And for good reason - if yours don’t herm, they can put out fantastic smoke.

  2. Reversal sprays, either using silver thiosulfate, or colloidal silver, or a number of other chemicals that block the ethylene pathways which control cannabis sexual expression, show that essentially all cannabis can be induced to herm with the right stressors. There are almost no cuts that won’t herm when these sprays are used. Are we, therefore, supposed to exclude all but these few indomitable varieties? No, of course not.

My point is that herms are possible in nearly all cannabis, and it’s likely triggered by some environmental factors in most strains, since the cannabis community’s actively selected away from those that routinely self-pollinate because it results in inferior quality flower. Perhaps Goji has a lower threshold than some other strains for that trigger, but I don’t think we have nearly enough evidence to conclude that in this case.

tons of solid points in there for sure, can’t argue that some of the legends aren’t herm prone like you said. on a personal level ive thought that way all the time; if the smoke is good enough ill work around a couple of seeds.

What a great conversation about this topic, great points all around. Its the same conversation that I have been having with some of the folks on Team Goji. Should herm’ed plants be included in this open pollination at all? If so whats an acceptable amount of herm tendencies?. Should a few nanners on the lowers be enough to cull an otherwise nice looking plant? As noted some of the most popular strains are based on herm’ed genetics (GG4 Cookies etc) So whose to say what a “undesirable” trait is anymore.

Where we ended up on the subject is that if it were for personal F2 making several folks would include the herm’ed plants (myself included) but since we were doing this for the community at large and we should have enough plants once all herms are culled that it shouldn’t narrow the gene pool that much to matter. Last thing I would want is to get F2’s out to people that are excited to run these, then some nanners accidentally pollenate their whole room and then they get a sour taste about getting additional F2 from this community.

I also want to be protective of Bodhi and his reputation since this is all done to keep his work going and be able to share it with folks who never were able to grow out Goji OG when it was around. I would HATE for people to grow out a bunch of F2s that they have problems with and think thats a representation of Bodhi’s work.

A bit long winded but I want this process to be as transparent as possible for everyone.

This is a really good point that I hadn’t considered in all of this. Really good thought

Whole garden shot. Will work on individual plant pics.

My power came back on this morning, they missed 2 light cycles. At midnight lights resume on schedule and I will start checking them regularly for herms

Hey, I jumped ahead about twenty posts, but saw that you mentioned cold temps. Any chance you have your plants on a cold concrete or dirt floor? My Snow Lotus cross from @GrowHard had herm issues but it was from the roots being too cold for too long. I think every strain I had did a little. They did not like cold roots. Just a thought. peace

I am wondering how the OG community defines hermi.

I’ve had what I call full blown hermi. The female flowering plant put out clusters of sacs, like a healthy male would, about 3 weeks into flower. No saving one like that, nor do I want any of his/her splooge on any unsuspecting damsel.

I just had another breeder’s plant throw out a bunch of low balls around 35 days in, enough to make a mess quickly, but I should have been paying closer attention. 2nd time with this strain, you’d a thunk I’d have been suspicious… naaaah!

There’s late nanners. I do let most of my plants go 10 weeks, so there’s that, I expect a few of 'em.

Then there’s plants that put out a few sacs in the lower regions. When I plucked them, no more showed up, top or bottm… or middle. Carry on.

I don’t mind a few seeds. I smoked my first joint in '67, it was mostly seeds, lol!

I’m not sure how I feel about NNN’s heshe’s. From what I understand, Bodhi self-describes his grow areas as “dirty,” and has folks like us testing. If a plant gets a few balls from whatever sort of stress, but the breeder still thinks it’s worth putting out there, maybe it’s special. I don’t mean worth in a monetary sense, either. I don’t think B’ s that way, and that’s one the reasons I like growing his weed. So, maybe these “hermis” are part of the deal, and should be included in the preservation? It’s a preservation, not a bettering by breeding. IDK.

On the other hand, I don’t really like surprises when I’m only growing a few plants.

I do know I’d like to see NNN grow them all out. Maybe separate the identity challenged, and collect some of their splooge for future experimentation on… Mars, j/k!

I dropped 6x Gojis in 2017, and got 5 females. Looking back, I was a shitty grower, and stressed the fuck out of them. Aside from a few lower sacs on a couple, around 2-3 weeks in flower, they all stayed that way, female.

I have to admit, Goji wasn’t a keeper for me, but I sucked pretty badly at indoors at the time. I just 1/2 way suck now.

I’m pretty sure I read Josey Wales saying GG came about from a hermi, so these may be useful?

Could be the Wookie41 x SSDD I just vaped, but I’m really interested in seeing all the Gojis grown out right now, and smoke tested, then we’ll talk, lol!

Just my 2¢
