Brown core close to the roots?

I just cut a plant down earlier and noticed this. I’ve never seen that before, and it was only about half an inch further into this piece, so it was down close to the roots. I investigated the root ball and the roots were nice and healthy, growing into the 5 gallon pot I had transplanted it into.

Is it rot? did the core of the roots look like they had some rot starting? Only thing I could think of. Maybe the roots had a problem that was getting worse. and moving into the core of the plant. I would expect to see a problem in the middle of the rootball. Other than that I have nothing.

Well, maybe an insect larvae?

I’ll have to dig into the root ball and tear apart the main stem some more. That area was fat like it was supercropped, but I don’t think I’ve ever looked at a cross section of a supercrop knot so I can’t compare. You can kinda see the pregnant belly on the left hand side against the lighter. This was a clone, so it could have been a super crop that just got older.

I was just surprised that the roots were nice and white on the exterior! I’ll report back soon-ish. Gotta do some dishes first.

The plant didn’t have any problems otherwise, it was just too big and has like a 2x stretch so I didn’t have room to flower it.

Looks like its dry, maybe something to do with the grooves in the stem?

It seemed related to that but I kept further chopping down into the stem and found that the dark bit seemed to be the original stem from when I took the clone that this plant turned into. I didn’t get a picture but following it all the way into the root ball, I went under where the roots came out the sides and found a little bit that used to be the stem and it crumbled. There’s no telling what caused it to be weird in the center though, I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.

I looked at the core under 60x magnification and it was just woody and dead, nothing seemed alive. I can’t tell if it was just the plant growing around dead material or if I just let my cloner get so gross that batch that I gave it some sort of gut rot.

I wonder if it was a borer worm of some kind. I never heard of anyone having that, but they have them with lots of vine plants like squash. It could’ve ben a rot or fungus that started moving into the main stem. I’d have to look into that more.

Isn’t that the highway for passing nutes up the plant?

That’s my understanding, but I’ve seen them hollow before!

I’m really intrigued by it overall. I’ll keep an eye out for this sort of thing.

In my mind though, I’m just going to assume that slimy stemmed clones will cause the plant to reject itself. Though it seems that the other plants from that clone batch have been fine!

After the autopsy and finding the woody bits but not seeing any bugs, I feel that my curiosity is satisfied and I’ll only need to be concerned if I notice it as a trend. This decision will help me sleep haha

The outside is where most of the action is. I would think it is no different than some trees have the middle rot out on them. Some pot species have hollow centers from what I have seen. I would think nothing of it.

I’d smoke it.

I’d hollow it out and smoke through it :smiling_imp::smiling_imp::smiling_imp:

A clone…
I’ll bet it picked up a little infection in the pith before growing roots and sealing it in. Plants can encapsulate some types of infection like that.
That’s my guess… :v:

Chromista oomycetes took refuge in your plants.

That’s correct t the phloem and xylem are where nutrients and water flow are on the outside of the the stems. Nutrients do not flow through the pith.

That is correct and all the plants I’ve grown have had hollow stems, and the bigger side branches too.

You mean Pythium? Yes,could be … icon_eek|nullxnull

Clones will always be weaker.
Bad idea to breed with them as well.

So like uhhhh do I need to scrap everything and get new soil or do I have another option? Am I fucked? How spooked should I be?
