Aww, you are so kind. Just measured it 8g with screen.
I was wondering. Do you recon it possible to drill and shape (pretty much) then soak the wood to put a bend in it? I mean… it sounds like it would work.
I know where you are going. After making it I was thinking how you would make a curved stem, not sure how yet. I don’t think you can bend it, I may have to try it now. Not this one though.
I’d be interested to see what you come up with. And yeah, not that one. It’s just right the way it is.
I just looked up a few curved pipes that people made. Seems they make them in two halves and glue them together while being curved.
That makes sense. Shoot, I might try my hand at it. I’ve made a few chips fly in my life.
I’d like to get one of your pipes and do what I do with wood.
My first try at relief carving.
This is one side of a double barrel 12 gauge. .
The other side.
This is my current project
Wow! It does work.
Oh sorry, I didn’t ask to put those up. I’ll delete them if you want.
You can tell there’s workmanship in that pipe, very nice job!
Heck no, I have a wood fetish. One day I will try some carving.
Thanks. I appreciate the labor you put into your pieces. That shows you are a craftsman. I’d love to see what you would come up with. My arthritis prevents me from doing a lot of carving but I still mess with it some.
They look great, how long is the lager one.
You can bend some woods with steam or hot water soaking quite a bit.
I was looking at having a go at making a ceramic clay one.
Nice artistic carving MoBilly.
I carved a voldermort wand several years ago for my daughter out of a piece of 2x4, it came out well considering 90% of it was done on a bench gender lol.
It is 9" long. I am used to bending wood for building acoustic guitar sides, have learned a few tricks doing it. I have a lot going on right now so I probably will not get around to trying to build one with a bend in it but you never know when the itch will need to be scratched. I just decided to do this one as I did not want to work on my other projects and wanted a simple and quick one that would only take a few hours.
I have one that is about the same length, breaks down into two pieces for easier cleaning. I was looking for around a 16 inch mark opium style one, but in one piece it would be a nightmare to clean.
Just checked, I used pipe cleaners from a Dollar store and they are a little 11" long. Depending how the hole is angled at the bowl I think a 16" one would be doable, cleaning from both sides. To make sure you get everything I think a fine steel wire can be stuck through on one end and a small piece of rag with the wire twisted and then pulled through will work. Hmmm… … I do have more wood to play with, maybe a maple one? What was I going to do today again?
Just like cleaning a rifle eh @MoBilly
Everything is connected. That’s nice work folks
Yep @bunny . That’s why I keep my old guitar strings. They have a nice grommet on one end that makes a good loop to go around a wooden pin for a handle. It’ll clean a rifle out lickety split!
I have an apple tree that got blown over 3 years ago, at our new house according to our neighbor. Apple trees have a very tight hard grain and are used for pipes a lot, as it takes a lot of heat to burn it. I may have an experiment at making one myself out of a bit of that. The hardest bit will be making the hole all the way through to the bowl without going off line.
Yeah, the bit does go off a little, the trick is to find the end. I am thinking of sprinkling some steel filings on the wood and putting a rod into the hole with a magnet against the rod. Best to practice on other wood until you figure out if the filings tell you where to drill. Might have to do it on the back side of the as the long hole should be closer to it and then flip over the board before drilling. Unless you have a good source of x-rays and have film to use I am not sure how else to figure out where the end is.
I have a section of crab apple when a tree fell because of an ice storm we had, wonder what it looks like inside?
