CFL closet - first indoor grow - log / questions

I had a bunch of cheese seeds so one of those unknowns could easily be cheese… any veterans out there able to potentially identify anything?

I have grown cheese and it looks like the 2nd picture. smell at harvest should confirm.

That’s the one i was thinking was cheese looking at leafly pics… that’s a smaller bud on that plant but it was easy access shot and the bigger buds (can see one in the background) look just like that but larger.

Thanks man I have a feeling you might be right

Foreground is bubblegum (purple) looking about a week out from harvest… the one behind it (green) is a little confusing to me… It looks like the most potent of the three but i see the tips browning on leaves on the upper part of the plant… I 'm thinking it’s just starting to mature but even some of the sugar leaf tips are getting some brown. Maybe just because they have more exposure to light?

If I knew what strain it was I’d be able to research it much easier. Thanks for any advice on how far these things are from harvest (estimate).

First grow, first harvest.

Anyone else have any input on how far (approx) these plants look from harvesting? I plan on doing a 24-hour dark period before harvest … was wondering about when to do the actual cut… i keep reading that light stimulates water to be pumped up through the plant so im guessing you want to cut them as quickly as possible after that last dark period? Or maybe even in the dark if possible?

The first pic below looking really close to me but still a lot of white hairs… leaves really starting to yellow around the buds., trichomes are starting to get cloudy / have been for a week or so…but im still confused on what exactly they are supposed to look like.

VERY happy with what i have gotten from a $50 setup all things considered.

All grown with Phillips CFL 23-watt bulbs from home depot… LOT of TLC and strategic bulb placing / leaf tucking but damn these buds are looking good for what people were telling me would basically grow me some subpar, super stringy weed (not people on here of course, people i know personally).

Thanks again for any feedback

wow, congrats, those are some of the nicest flowers I’ve ever seen from fluoros! Amazing. Did you grow them in soil? How many watts total were over the space?

In general, I harvest when 80-90% of the pistils have turned orange, or 75%, it looks like a few of your plants could be taken down now. If the plant seems healthy and it’s still taking water then you can go till 100% the pistils are brown.

FWIW I keep the plant going 12/12 until I harvest them, I dont like the idea of stressing them with a dark period right before harvest.

Thank you VERY much … it’s my first grow ever so that is a huge compliment. They are in week 8 (pushing 9) … i feel like i could get another healthy week of 12/12 out of them… maybe even more if the leaves stay green on that back plant where the tips are browning but leaves are all mostly still deep-green.

Man i cant WAIT to post close ups of the buds… some of the sites that i cant get my camera near are COVERED in trichome…more than the ones in the pics(at least of the green plants). like this sorta blew my mind how well these turned out. Plus- people telling me i wouldnt be able to do it just made me that much more determined. I think I maximized the efficiency of the CFL by making sure the conditions in the room were perfect as far as temperature/humidity/fresh air (nice alaskan air is very rich in co2 and i had a fan blowing right from outside to my intake…probably played a role) I probably could have had a better nutrient setup (meaning i definitely could have lol) but it was a last minute type of situation…happy i even got to do it at all… Luckily it’s legal here in Alaska so i don’t have to worry about law.

Total of 12 bulbs (3 packs of 4 from depot at like $8 per pack) … It’s a washer/dryer closet that has a nice hvac 4 inch exhaust built right in so i bought a booster fan and lowered the ceiling to around 5.3 feet … floor is 3x3 feet. So 4 of those bulbs per plant- standard #4 sunshine soil with some homemade nutrients and yes,a little bit of miracle grow flowering solution… heavily diluted but… it worked and im already flushing.

Any tips on the actual day of harvest? when to cut? (right after dark cycle i think) but… right at the end of the light cycle maybe instead?

Trying to plan out the day of harvest… wondering if i need to cut the main stem of the plant ASAP after turning on the lights so it cuts off the roots and keeps the mousture off the buds… am i right on that? Should it be first thing in the morning before i turn on the lights or can i at least turn them on and take time making precision cuts? Like how long does it take the plant to pump all the nutes up through the plant (that im suppsedly trying to avoid).

Thanks again.

I really don’t think it makes any difference. I’ve harvested at night, during the day, morning, afternoon, never noticed any difference in the dried flowers.

The theory behind cutting during the dark cycle is to keep the sugars out of the leaves. During the dark cycle, the sugars produced in the leaves through photosynthesis is moved to the root system. By cutting during the dark cycle, you should have fewer sugars in the leaves and a faster cure. If you dry and cure properly, there is little difference in my experience. Though I still prefer give 24-48 hours of dark then cut the main stem right away.

Thank you both for the relplies on that… i plan on drying and curing for a good month before i even touch the stuff. I dont want it smelling like a horse barn

I’ll have to think about that… doesn’t seem like extra dark would do anything negative at the very end anyway but that’s why we ask questions / do experiments.

I usually start vaping the herb after 6-7 days of drying - maybe it’s a little uncured but the flavors are strongest fresh off the vine IMO

I like to press my rosin around that time too. Right as stems crack, but don’t break I’ll buck off any small popcorn (untrimmed of course) and press it. By the time I smoke that, I got a decent cure on the top buds.

Do you guys trim at all before you hang them? I’ve read to leave everything because it “protects the buds” from dust and hair/ stuff in the air while it hang drys… seems sorta meh but again, first time.

What di you mean by “press rosin”? i was thinking 5 - 6 days hanging and then trimming/moving to jars to cure … i mean obviously watching them and moving to cure right as the stems begin to snap and not bend (water level).

If understand the process correctly, the idea is to first dry them out at a basic level (hang dry) until the buds are mostly dry/firm to the touch / stems crack when bent… Then the curing process begins (because there is still water in the stems (and some probably still in the buds) that will make its way out to the buds and further dry out (cure) which can take up to a month or so for proper. Curing is done in jars with (some) aeration (probably open jars for the first few days then taking the lid off multiple times per day to clear out any water vapor / humidity.

Rosin is a solventless extract simlar to “wax”. It is made by squishing buds between heated plates in a press.

Oh gotcha… the ol hair straightener stuff my friends make

Yes, but the press is bigger, has better temperature control, and has more pressure.

Ayyy- like making shatter with a heat mat and no vacuum oven (poor man’s way). not that i’m poor, just dont like throwing big money at unnecessary stuff like $50 gallons of nuted water

Any last tips before i cut her? I’m going 2 more nights including tonight and then doing a morning harvest at the end of the regular 12 hour dark schedule and bubblegum is coming down.

Thanks for all the advice, never thought i could have grown such good weed with $1.50 bulbs
