Fascinating article! Thanks for that @rootfarmer. Iā€™m breaking out my mighty to try these numbers out. I typically set mine at 385.

Me and the wife just got approved for a loan gonna buy a house within the next few months. Weā€™re looking for something with at least 5 acres. Somewhere surrounded by treesā€¦ hopefully I can shoot targets without being bothered. Plus the bonus of Viginia woods around me

Mink are smart and efficient hunters, also called Water Wolves for a reasonā€¦

They realize that hole may not last, and that the fish are easy prey while in the state of vivernation (like hibernation, but at least minimally aware of whats going on, like a catatonic state). They will take them and STORE them for later. Like a squirrel with nuts! We actually found 8 fish @ $500 ea, neatly tucked between a liner and a filter box one year at the store I used to work at. Mink was talking them and stacking em up like a pantry! In the summer, they arent a problem as they have many other prey items not hibernating. In the winter it gets scarce. And they are hard to trap, like I said the little buggers are smart!

Two are still ponds; and 1 has just a waterfall.
They are sustained with rain water and I toss aquabac in there to keep the mozzies dead.

I canā€™t even afford to run 1x filtered pond so I went with standing water

@DougDawson ; wonderful! We have a breeding pair of Dicky-Dick Penises in the area that love our feeders. We call them knife face fliers.

Congratulations @Stankonia! That sounds like beautiful surroundings. 5 acres is just right I think.

We have an issue with Emerald Ash Borer beetles here in the last 2-3 years. It sucks, as it WILL wipe out all the mature Ash trees here in 5-7 years (thankfully they donā€™t affect saplings, so they can regenerate), but during the process, the bark looks like it gets lighter. They call it blondingā€¦ What it really is, is the woodpeckers searching for the larvae of the EAB. Entire sides of trees with the bark destroyedā€¦ Needless to say, we have tons of peckers here, Downy, Pilleated, red headedā€¦ And of course, I have 6 Ashs in the yard (1 BIG mofo thats badly blonding already). 1/3 of my trees will be gone in a few years :frowning:

We had a customer who did just that. He got smart though, set up a little motion detector by the hole in the ice. When the alarm went off, he got his .22 and took up aim at the hole. Mink may stay down a minute or more. Once the mink popped its head up, it was doneā€¦ Sadly, I live to close to neighbors to be able to plink one of those little fā€™ersā€¦

Those spotted lanternfly things too. When I went to look at a truck right over the border in PA I killed at least ten of them within 20 minutes. They were everywhere.
