Damn thats strange… The night before halloween is “mischief night” or “Goosey night” depending on where you grew up. I’ve heard like 3 or 4 other names for it as well, so this isn’t a north / south thing LOL… But the night before halloween is when the TP flew, the eggs and shaving cream came out… We were never destructive, but had our fun. OH, and the focus seems to vary slightly by area too? My cousins in Saddle Brook would also go for each other with socks filled with flour?? We never attacked others out, no, we would team up…

It was Mischief night here. I’ve heard Devil’s night on tv and movies. I’ve never heard "goosey night in my life. I guess maybe their kids just also adjust the schedule for that? Seems like the kids who want to go raise hell might just skip the parade and reverse their nights maybe.

I recall some thuggish friends calling it “Pumpkin Shopping Night”. Where they would go around ANOTHER neighbourhood to select the pumpkin they wanted from someone else yard.

Much like Mr Fischoeder in Bob’s Burgers.

That might be the tamest activity I’ve ever heard of for mischief night lol

Probably tough doing mischief night as a Canadian though. All that apologizing probably takes up valuable mischief time.

Yeah, I was a total jerk then too. And then we got a little older and discovered alcohol. On Long Island it was a common practice to visit other towns looking for fights. We were a stupid, rowdy bunch of kids up to no good mostly. At some point we found cannabis. It was so taboo then, very secretive, only the really dangerous signed on at first. But as time went by, more and more people and kids joined up. Before long the fighting stopped among the stoners. We would all now visit the other towns, most often the parks, and party with our newfound righteous brothers and sisters. Amazing how cannabis changed the whole culture in our youth. I’m still hoping for a similar effect now that we’ve turned that corner with cannabis. I still do believe that cannabis and other psychedelics expand consciousness unlike alcohol and other modern drugs. With minds wide open we may be able to stem destructive capitalism from ending most of life on earth. Happy Halloween?

The key is to yell “Sorry!” as you leap from the darkness to claim your prize. It acts as a distraction.

If we want to mug you, one Canadian will yell “Sorry” in front of you while the other behind you mugs you and then yells “sorry!” as they bolt to distract you from the person in front of you that is now also running away.

If you walk through a Canadian graveyard at night all the ghosts whisper “Sorry” for inconveniencing you as you walk around their graves.

We also use it when accessing our health care system or eating Ketchup chips when online with American friends ;D

I tried those chips again (they got here Friday) and I just don’t get it. My GF however is in her glory and was putting them in mac and cheese last night.

A polite mugging sounds delightful in comparison to the alternative though!

Have you tried “All Dressed” chips? It’s the most modestly dressed crisp of Canada.

I’ve heard of them but never tried them. I feel like it would be an overload but I’d give them a shot.

Having spent my early years in Bergen County NJ, in the ‘50s and ‘60s, cabbage night was what we called that night of misbehaving.

Never heard “Cabbage night” either. It’s funny how Goosey and Cabbage are well into “Taylor Ham” territory. It seems like that area just loves referring to things by weird wrong names

I mean I didn’t say I was in a rush to try them… lol If I see them though I’ll give them a shot and let you know. I don’t like salt and vinegar or ketchup chips so either they have to blend amazingly to create a completely different flavor or the BBQ needs to dominate the conversation. Ruffles in the mid 90s used to make KC Masterpiece BBQ chips that were awesome. No idea why they stopped.

Lol… still not caring what it’s called, but I gotta say that was my first thought on seeing that map too… it’s a remarkably similar distribution. :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe it’s something in the water up there

I think we’re just watching real-time etymology at work…

Definitely a nicer theory than I was working with

Those chips are damn good :joy:

Hey, I called it Mischief night, my mom called it goosey night… I have heard of cabbage night, but that was Warwick NY and other farm communities. I kinda associated it with the farming areas…

ya, its fresh and not treated with all the stuff you guys get…

I’m still waking up, so you all have me at a disadvantage. My wit wakes up like 6 hours after I do…
