Chez Calix - Journey of a Junior grower

Not what I was expecting to see…
Lots of roots. The bottom half look good, some of the top half of the roots look nasty.

The darker upper sections, are they slimy? or just discolored?

Cheers

How hot is the soil also looks wet

Thr soil has zero added nutrients . Just straight BX PROMIX and added perlite.

The soil was definitely over wet when started but let dry out and it over dried once maybe .

I’ve set my tent up in another room for now and going to try again. With dry soil . Just sprayed with spray bottle .

@Gpaw right ???
The roots are healthy looking and feeling not slimy…

Maybe they needed nutrients in soil??? I will be trying from Juffy pellets next couple days …

I would suspect too wet .

I hope that is the answer… I mean over 25-30 days it’s odd they never got the chance to succeed…

I feel so horrible…

It doesn’t make sense . I mean they did dry out and I was only using spray bottle.

It doesn’t seem like the roots would get enough water just by spraying the top of soil

All I can do is start over.

Maybe the lights I started with were not strong enough ? I was using a blurple for the first 20+ days

If I may a tip on watering when their first seedling just use the spray bottle and try and just keep that Center area wet . put it under a dome for a dayor two and it will create humidity which day love add a heat pad you’re great, but never let them dry out if you use a heat pad you may have to spray two or three times a day . once you get past that stage , transfer into something slightly larger and when you water only till you see it dripping through your weep holes on the bottom then stop do not let the pot sit in the water allow the water to drain into something below your pot and then dispose of if you let it sit in the water it will only weep back up into the plant and then create excess water sorry if I’m giving you too much information I’m not 100% sure on what level you’re at it appears that most of your problems are at the watering stage now remember promix has no nutrient value so once your plants get to a certain height and actually start to form leaves you should start feeding your plants with the low ppm of about 250 to 300 also seedling love a little kelp juice (Captain Neptune is a good choice)

I imagine this along with over watering would be some of my root problems

FFS! Lol I will start them in peat pellets and then I will add to the promix. I am going to add some all purpose fertilizer. Im an idiot I thought promix had nutrients.

I’ll whip up a recipe tomorrow

Also pot size easer to manage water with a seedling in a solo cup then in a 1 gal pot so smaller the better and up plant example

Peat pod roots show through then up pot to solo cup 2 weeks or better
Then 1/2 gal pot for up to 4 weeks buy this time roots have bunched up always break up root ball when transplanting so to allow them to travel downward
Don’t heavily pat down the soil leave loose and airy

Don’t rambling

wow, like Gpaw, I didn’t expect to see the roots looking normal. Was there damage to the stalks? I see a dark coloring in the image of all the plants in a black tray on the stalk above the roots.

I think it’s dirt from my fingers from handling them and. Washing them.

I kept the biggest one. And just gave it a feed of some nutrients … We will see… I was under the impression they could grow straight in just pro mix for some time.

I’ve got some others starting out now got round 3…

Alot.of roots hey…growing the wrong direction…

Why ?? The roots searching for nutrients???

Make. A bit of sense. No food no grow plant

They had lots of light and heat.

Over watering and no nutrients ?? Does that sound like a accurate diagnosis?? @JoeCrowe
I said to my friend I should.have put all purpose in and he said that wasn’t the problem but maybe he meant I should of started feeding when real leaves showed?

I threw some beans in HP 3 weeks ago and they’ve been slow going for me also. I’ve read that as the bales age, the starter charge feed becomes depleted and rendered obsolete which necessitates the need to feed earlier. I’m inclined to believe this because as soon as I gave them a more generous nute feed last, they took off. I bought the Promix I’m using back in July. I like your course of action to give nutes and I believe you’ll see results in the coming week.

Hope no one takes offense to this, but I must disagree that seeds which don’t eventually sink aren’t viable. I soak for 24 hours and then plant directly in soil. Used this method back in the day and I’ve been using it recently also. In my experience, I’ve rarely had seeds sink and I’ve never had big issues with getting them to pop. Not saying there’s a right or wrong, but don’t count out a seed based on buoyancy. Lots of ways to skin the germination cat, that’s for sure!

Bought mine in July also and been I garage opened since

Let’s go with that!!!

This is my first time soakin.

So are they supposed to float or sink ? All my 12 I just froze .and put in cups are all floating .

Thanks man. Food to hear from you also

Haha depends who you ask, buddy. If they’re eventually going into plastic cups, you won’t be losing much in terms of soil by planting everything. Maybe seeds that sink are more durable? I can only tell you that I’m agnostic to whether they float or sink and that’s based off personal experience. Let us know how it shakes out!

lol
So a dozen seeds they all no good cuz floating … Lol
I only did this way because they are older …(freeze
And soak)

I’m going to germ my regular way and soak in paper towel … Wish I never .

Are they supposed to sink over the soak ? Or sink right away??? If it works then that’s a fast way to determine VIABILITY

Again, for me, I don’t measure viability based off whether they sink or float. I’d plant them all regardless. For perspective, every seed I’ve planted this year was floating before I planted into soil. Only 1 didn’t germinate. I won’t, however, tell you it’s wrong to wait until they drop.

Just the other day I threw some seeds in a shot glass just checking them for germination. Had no intention of growing them. Anyway they were all cracking while they were floating. Very fresh seed.
Just saying.

Cracking as in ready to show tails???

How long should you be soaking them before moving onto paper towel - if they don’t crack/germ in the water ?

Yes starting to show tails. I was only making an observation about them not sinking. I believe most people soak 12 - 24 hours.
And those seeds were very fresh recently made seeds

You could look at fresh seeds and they’ll crack lol
