I recently went to Costa Rica. There was a beach just south of the seedy little town of Jaco, called Playa Hermosa. In Playa Hermosa I met a guy selling fresh coconut water next to the beach. For about $1.50 he’d chop open a fresh coconut, put a bio-degradable straw in it, and hand it to you. Sipping coconut water on the beach as I while away my morning is certainly a relaxing thing to do. As I chatted with the guy, I noticed some piles behind his stall. I asked what they were, and he said coconut husks that he sells to gardens. I looked closer and realized it was Coco Coir. He has a shredder that he uses to shred the remains of the coconuts that he sells…

Third world countries gotta think outside the box. That man is doubling his profits, using what others might just call waste…
In Cozumel we would visit a few plant nurseries regularly. One super common thing we noticed, the “original” airpots. LOL. Not uncommon for them to use washing machine tubs as a planter, especially for larger things like palms. Think of it, a washer tub is loaded with holes like an airpot. Either stainless or enamel coated to resist rusting.
Not to mention, the soil in Coz was shiite… At least in Costa Rica you can find rich soil. Coz was super sandy and hardly any organics… There’s a few bars in Coz that I can think of that would benefit from a relationship with a local nursery!
