Coronavirus Facts and Fiction - January - May 2020 [Closed]

A lot of crap and mis-information being promoted, but a lot of good info as well. This thread pisses me off, makes me laugh and makes me glad to be a member of OG - sometimes all in one sitting.

This has been said before, but its worth repeating.

Take the time to say THANKS to anyone you have any contact with who is out on the front lines risking their health for your benifit.

Im sure I forgot some. In no particular order:
Your Doctor, nurse, receptionist.
Grocery store workers
police
firemen
garbage men
plumbers, electricians, etc fixing problems at home or work
any service members you know
your neighbors - unless they are jerks

Thats was a stupid joke. Be nice. That can be more contagious than the virus.

I must admit I got myself enough to hold over until I can harvest some

Funny how sportball players and entertainers are exposed as useless pretty fast. Iā€™d rather the lady thatā€™s still working at grocery store, or the nurses and other essential workers be paid the same as those good for nothingā€™s right now. If government said they were gonna triple all those workers wage during this event and pay for it with my tax dollars. Iā€™d be proud to pay that tax

I was grabbing a few things at superstore today as I walk through the doors they announce ā€œall of our credit and debit machines are down, cash onlyā€. I thought it was going to be the beginning of a movie.

Everyone was chill

@Mongobongo Iā€™ve heard and ready several articles and news reports that there is 3 strainsā€¦ also that there is a second outbreakā€¦ what is concerning is that the only ā€œ60 years old and upā€ are ā€œhigh riskā€ that may only be true for one of the strainsā€¦ the other 2 may be killing all ages young and oldā€¦ I mean the Dr. from Wuhan that passed away trying to alert the world about the virus was a young looking dude.

The USA has finally BEGUN testing and the numbers are skyrocketing alreadyā€¦(up 40% in ONE day!)

Donā€™t forget your mail carrier eitherā€¦Those poor souls are also on the front lines!

Iā€™m still going to peopleā€™s homes to fix appliances, it doesnā€™t matter what happens people will still need their appliances in working order.

Warranty work has almost stopped as most people donā€™t want someone in there house and the manufacturers donā€™t seem to be dispatching calls. COD work on gas appliances is picking up because they will work intermittently for some time but the fear of them quitting completely has people calling in.

Be safe everyone

This seems to be a new development. Has anyone heard this yet or am I just behind on my Wu Flu News.

Yes, Iā€™ve been reading about that. There have been rumors about complications in unexpected age groups. Mostly from Italy at this point. Everyone is learning more as more reliable data becomes available and, as noted earlier, there are at least two variants of this strain. Because of the large lag of time between infection / recovery, the knowledge of what this thing is doing across the population seems as though itā€™ll take some time.

Not trying to spread rumors or anything. Im concerned and dont know what to do except try to seek info? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3J6zm6zgah0&feature=youtu.be

So whats giving me anxiety at the moment is the unknown. What should I be doing in terms of my finances and planning for future craziness? Iā€™m still working and expect my company to not do anything drastic for quite some time, but thereā€™s definitely a lot of uncertainty there. Things running thru my head:

A major bank in the area is closing 80+% of its branches. What if most of the banks close, do I need my cash out in hand at home, now?

If this goes on for months, should I be preserving as much of my cash now as possible? Use credit cards, make the minimum payments ( normally carry no balance month to month).

What if I do get laid off, are banks going to forego mortgage payments for an amount of time?

Long term- is this whatā€™s going to happen every flu season now? Expect to get periodically locked down? How is this going to impact the global economy on a day to day basis, are we going to slide into a prolonged recession or are the ā€œmarketsā€ really not going to exist as we know them anymore?

Crazy coincidental thing that is really great that happened for my wife and I- she converted an old 401k in late Feb to a vanguard account but the money has been sitting there and didnt get invested. So she pulled it near the height and has the opportunity to invest at the bottom. But w the markets in turmoil, Iā€™m wondering if taking the tax hit would have less of an impact on that money than playing the market, even now.

Similarly, my previous employer switched 401k providers. So they pulled that money on March 1, and moved it over Monday this week. So I missed a big part of the crash with those funds. Both situations we did NOT plan for!

Agree. Iā€™m angry with so much failing from the government to properly communicate early on. There was plenty of time to get folk prepared and to allow everyone to digest the possibilities.

@Calyxander, do you have some thoughts on financial strategies for different scenarios?

My wife is a postal carrier they are offering two weeks paid sick time if you or anyone in your household gets itā€¦also if you take a sick day for any reason you must be tested before you can returnā€¦I worry about her she comes into contact with literally hundreds of people a day as she walks around a town that doesnā€™t know what hand soap is

I also believe they will be some of the last allowed to stay home. rain sleet snow Corona

Received this by email so not my words.

This is just to arm you with information

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who donā€™t understandā€¦

It has to do with RNA sequencingā€¦ I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an ā€œall human virusā€. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each yearā€¦ you get immunity two waysā€¦through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animalsā€¦ the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humansā€¦ then itā€™s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunityā€¦ the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isnā€™t human, and the human immune system doesnā€™t recognize it so, we canā€™t fight it off.

Nowā€¦ sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years itā€™s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to humanā€¦ once that happensā€¦we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly itā€™s gonna beā€¦

H1N1 was deadlyā€¦but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. Itā€™s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirusā€¦ it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how longā€¦but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a personā€¦ But here is the scary partā€¦ in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, ā€œslipperyā€

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a ā€œhumanā€ virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunityā€¦doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungsā€¦

Thatā€™s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenzaā€¦ this one is slippery AF. And itā€™s a lung eaterā€¦And, itā€™s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain Lā€¦which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passedā€¦(honestlyā€¦I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolationā€¦

And let me end by sayingā€¦right now itā€™s hitting older folks harderā€¦ but this genome is so slipperyā€¦if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folksā€¦ acting like youā€™re unafraid is so not sexy right now.

#flattenthecurve. Stay home folksā€¦ and share this to those that just are not catching on.

Definitely appreciate the science behind the situation, thanks for sharing.

Thatā€™s wrong it is a human invention, a biological adapted organism, created in a lab. Lots of experts have said its impossible for this to happen in nature, as it has no junk dna, just perfect short protein sting combinations of HIV, Sars and Mers all neatly packaged into a corona virusā€¦

It was weaponized in the level 4 bioengineering lab that is in Wuhan China. That lab was built by Bill Gates and George Soros. Funny that a foundation that bill Gates funds owns the patent for the weaponized Corona virus. Whatā€™s even more odd is Gates and ovomit did a docuseries called pandemic on Netflix that pretty much lays this entire outbreak out, they also push for a universal vaccine that is mandated by the govt. If you donā€™t think this was done intentionally you need to wake up

Well, IMO, the worst thing for anyone to do is panic and sell all positions.

If an equity has fundamental value e.g, positive earnings etc., history tells us that it will go back up eventually. No one knows with any certainty when this will happen, but it most certainly will happen.

Whether you own individual stocks, ETFs or Mutual Funds or are worried about your 401K, time is on your side.

For younger people with longer time horizons, this is a tremendous buying opportunity.

Dollar cost averaging or reducing the cost basis of existing positions will pay off in time.

Geezers like me need to focus on much shorter time frames, 5 to 10 year maximum.

And of course your risk exposure should be limited through adequate diversification, never, ever put all of your eggs in one basket.

My favorite alternative to money in the bank or other so called safe money instruments are
US Treasury TIPSā€”Treasury Inflation Protected Securities. Given this low interest rate environment they are very attractive. Minimum investment is only $100. Zero fees if bought
through Treasury Direct.

This is only a very general overview of market history and reinforces the need for anyone with exposure to the stock market to be properly diversified.

I obtained my General Securities license (series 7) in 1980, subsequently getting my General Securities Principal license (series 24). I worked in the financial industry for over 25 years.

If anyone has any questions regarding their specific circumstances, feel free to shoot me a PM.

I will be happy to give more specific advice. We may even chat on the phone.
