Do we need non-cannabis categories in 2020?

I don’t care either way honestly. Im here to grow my grow knowledge. I don’t come here to post my political views but agree with others that that category needs to be nixed. The tank though can be a good thing if only to keep the more heated disagreements from cluttering up the main cannabis threads.
The choice is ultimately yours @LemonadeJoe but thanks for the chance for letting the community give their opinion first.

WOW. This thread ‘grew some legs’.
Being new here I poked around a lot. I skimmed through the shark tank and figured it was an interesting idea, sort of “if you want to take a dump – do it over there”.
So long as there is no ‘spillage’ - cool, but if hard feelings are spilling into the cannabis threads – not cool. :v::peace:

So if nobody really cares about the politics part … why is it filled with all that shit then?

I would agree get rid of the Politics Threads a Good Start to the Recalmation
We have no one to blame but ourselves…
Namaste.

If this is not a rhetorical question  its probably because you have made the wrong assumption, and some people do care or just want to add there $1000 worth :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I think its a bit like a light on, outside of your house attracting moths, some people just have to have a look, and then get drawn in. If it wasn’t there it would probably not happen.

@TeamOG

Another solution, policy-wise, may be to restrict non-cannabis discussion to: each user’s personal thread, which should be restricted to 1 or annually merged into one thread(allowing @Mr.Sparkle to remain organized  ).

:joy: yes, guilty as charged.

Usually when I’m bored and keep seeing it at the top, I can’t help but take a look. As they say, opinions are like assholes and everybody’s got one. If there’s no civil discourse going on, nobody’s mind will be changed, and there’s really no point. Politics is everywhere, all the time now.

It’s invasive, but I’ve started using the mute button on topics here. That’s a fine solution too.

lol @cannabissequoia

As to the topic at hand, im not one for limiting what can or cannot be discussed so long as its “civil” to a point, and will say the shark tank even if it dives into the depths at times or a lot of the times, does serve a purpose… Without it, im sure things would blow up more often in regular threads, polluting things in general.

Now i don’t think the shark tank should be a place to freely bash whomever to just cause a rise in people but as an actual place to call out actions or issues without spillage to other threads, but some people don’t know how to separate themselves from that or have a handle on their own emotions but thats on them to learn.

As for political threads, all they have shown me is who im fine with not conversing with, not because of differing opinions, but that the ones that seem to be loudest are the ones that are also the most insecure with themselves and or their own opinions, whether “knowledgeable” usually not or it’s typically those same members that feel the need to attack anyone who has a differing opinion because they have a subconscious fear that they may be wrong or at least they have the inability to question their own opinions with differing viewpoints or logical discussion because they have tied their opinions to emotion rather than insightful discussion.

So instead of " i don’t like this because of ____ reasons, but i want to hear logically response from those that differ to try and see why your opinion is that way and from your perspective" it usually becomes " All you M0ther F-ing snowflakes, suck on these doritos dusted balls, and bend over your “insert personal insult” azz so i can kick you with these baby seal skin boots so hard that you get time warp to a new century" which is typically followed by posts trying to demean or discredit people or their opinions not with facts, but with falsehoods and or shit memes that do nothing other than to stir the pot or spread fake propaganda which in the end doesn’t add anything of value to this world.

… but thats just my opinion, and i read quite a bit about politics and world related issues throughout the week.

You hit it on the head right there.
Politics is everywhere and it’s gonna get way worse till November.
Be nice to be able to go some where without someone getting you riled up.
And if that’s there yes a person could get drawn in as curiosity kills the cat.

I always believed that these hobby forums like this should be “things related to our hobbys and interest.”
Be it fishing, woodworking/carpentry, the plant we all love, people’s veggie gardens or whatever which calms the body and soul.
I don’t see how politics or being a jerk can benefit anybody here.

I’m on the fence with restricting peoples thoughts or speech, but I do know that I have seen more petty name calling in the political threads than other places. Maybe move it to a locked category like the shark tank and let people clearly know that it’s every man for himself in there and people would have to specifically search for a thread without the topic popping up in New or Unread or however it works with the locked topics.

That’s the way it is currently

It is?? I thought it was in the Smokers Lounge? Never mind

It is in the Smoking Lounge but unmoderated, so shark tank style. I guess a good solution could be to keep the Smokers lounge but without the Political War & Debate category.

My second thought is to suppress the Shark Tank, we are adults but as Shadey suggested once you insult or get insulted you won’t forget it in the rest of moderated threads and your relationship and interaction with that person won’t be the same.

Someone might say that it is a sort of censorship, but for me freedom of expression doesn’t mean bullying, insulting or bashing anyone, I don’t see any benefit for the forum having all those quarrels.

Things like religion, politics and money tend to divide people, I don’t know if we should lose all non cannabis related topics but on the other hand it could free up some server space and remove potential for disagreement. I honestly think some people are intentialy abrasive and will be given the chance regardless of topic but provoking it with hot topics may just be to much. I’ve always thought if it can stay in the tank so be it but if not then there’s a issue, that can be harder said then done for some of us who grew up having to have a rebel mentality to do what we do. Its hard to have a peaceful blending of people when we all come from such potentially different backgrounds and current situations. The best practice is to ignore the subjects or people that get under your skin and not take the bait. We can all learn alot from and benefit each other greatly we just need to sit back sometimes smoke a bowl and remember life would be boring if we were all the same.

Looks like I might be of the minority opinion. Keep it. Keep all the non-weed related, challenging conversations in there. Warn/Boot people who can’t contain their agression.

In my first couple weeks on OG I stumbled on the Shark Tank conversations. I seriously questioned my interest in this forum. I muted the category and it was all suddenly good.

I love the Honeypot nature of it. Let the wasp’s go in there. Show themselves. If they come out stinging they’re dead.

Also, trade secret, If I’m having a difficult conversation with someone I can look at their history in the Shark Tank to see if I want to continue expending energy in their direction.

This is an adult forum right? 99% of OG is a massive safe space anyhow… sharks tank is a containment board. As far as people getting butthurt over somebody else’s political views, that is THEIR issue to deal with. So unless you want hurr durr orange cheeto man bad on every thread, leave the containment board where it is. If you close shark’s tank, will people then be able to flag all political comments or any comment that violates one safe space for mods to run behind and delete?

So what’s your proposal, just moving Political War & Debate category to the Shark’s tank?

I’ll put it this way. I never go into them for good reason. I have a political opinion, but unfortunately it’s in direct conflict to 50% of the population here in the US. So, I don’t go.

I definitely don’t need a sharks tank. I don’t go to that dark place in life anymore.

Anybody got any interest in some good dank bud? mmmm, I thought so. me too! :innocent:
