I just bought the 48x30 should have tomorrow.
Meat Dept, local Supermarket, ask for Containers that Fish come in. I get BOTH the 2" and “6” High ones. They will hold up to a 5-Gallon Bucket. SS/BW…mister
I use these under the need boxes from Lowe’s. After extensive research, this was the best fitting tray I could find and it will hold 5 gallons of water with plants no problem. I have mine on a basic pvc frame.
How do you feel about using two 2x2 trays?
I grabbed some of these at AutoZone they fit perfectly in a 2x2
that might work…will need to go back to chatgpt to ask how many 6.5inch round pots i can fit. in a 2x4 i might lose area in the middle, but I could scale back things a little.
A 22"x46" space allows 20-21 depending on packing style while twin 22"x 22" spaces will fit 16-18 again depending on packing style. Depending on how you constrain the problem (if 6.5" is the top outer diameter and the pot edge goes over the lip of the tray) you could fit 4 staggered rows of 3 in the 2x2 tray or 24 pots total. A single tray could maximally allow 26 pots, maybe 28 if the side of the tent bulges out.
6.5 would be the outer on the top. just 5 inches on the bottom. not sure why chagpt said I could only fit 16 in a 2x4. It seemed correct. I can’t imagine fitting 16 into a 22"x22".
To elaborate a bit: The maximum number of pots that will ever fit in your tent is 28.
Since the rim of the pot can extend over the rim of the catch tray, you can pretty easily squeeze 12 pots zig-zag. So with TWO of the 22" trays you can get 24 pots in there (less than the 28 that would fit without the trays drawing a line down the middle). So, you are loosing some packing efficiency with the division in the middle.
I would definitely use the insert no matter what, as others have said it’s better to have extra layers even if you have a tray you trust. Belt and suspenders here, right?
I think I found the best one yet for a two-tray setup, these are 22x22x1.5”, hold two gallons of overflow, and are $22 each:
If you have a hundred to spend, these are waaaay nice, should last forever:
I’ll just let you know that I scoured the Internet trying to find the largest tray that would both fit inside a 2x4 and maximize the space. Any actual flood tray is either too large to actually fit or much smaller than a true 2x4, multiple trays obviously wastes space too. That Lowes under the bed box is the largest option available in a single tray, plus it’s much more affordable than some of the specialty plastics. Good luck with the search
