Hey friends.
So, when I first started this little gardening hobby, I bought a 16 hole ez cloner and had huge success with it. 100% roots, every time.
I am using clonex, following the directions on the bottle, and have the cloner in my veg tent. Sometimes I will run a humidifier in there, but mostly not.
Recent cloning attempts have been poor…most of my cuttings just rot. Occasionally one or 2 (usually the ones at the corner holes of the cloner) will root, but it takes a looong time!
I empty and clean this thing between uses. Not sure what I am doing wrong, or why my results would go from stellar to crapola with no real change in how I am doing things.
Any suggestions??
I am tempted to just switch to a different method, but my brain has to know what’s going on with this…
A couple drops of bleach per gallon of water will stop that rot from happening and give them enough time to root. Those cloners need to be sterile to work well. Water temperature like @Foreigner mentioned are another thing that can cause big issues.
Here’s my suggestions after dealing with Cyanobacteria and contamination. I beat a pathogen that makes people shelve their cloner or ditch it entirely. Read over this thread to see ideas that pertain to your circumstances.
DON’T share measuring tools! Get yourself separate spoons. I learned this from the creator of Permaklone collars.
IF you have high alkalinity, BUBBLE (bleach is good, but I use even powerful Oxine) and add a few drops to a few gallon bucket. RINSE only with tap water and some soap. CHANGE it when sediment sits on the bottom.
IF higher temp is the problem, ADD small ice water bottles that will fit. Have EXTRA ready to change out as temp rises and melt.
Product like Rez Clear can also help keep water sanitized, but I rely on PRE BUBBLING water before using in a cloner.
The powder is fine. What I do is dip cut in powder, dip back in water used to cut underneath, the a bit more powder as paste on the cut end, then shake excess off. Paste seals the cut end. Works every time flawlessly.
Wow, that’s good to know as I have an EZ Cloner in the equipment shed. I figured it would get washed off before it has a chance to do it’s magic. I just always used tap water and a few drops of bleach and it did pretty well. Thanks.
Money advice right here, I’ve saved dozens of peoples clone game with this simple advice. People have looked at me like I’m nuts, every time. Until they see the results.
I only run a bubbler or ez cloner in the fall, winter and early spring . Summer temps raise the water temps too high and everything always rots. I use plugs in the summer and cloner/ bubbler in the winter and the rot stopped. Also hydrogen peroxide in the water once a week in the cloner and bubblers.
