First time grower

Sooo I don’t know anything about growing but I’m super excited to try. I purchased some seeds at an event a couple weeks ago and they seem to be doing well. So far I did the paper towel method and I have them already transferred into red solo cups. I had them in the dark… Two of them have sprouted and I now have them in my window… The other three I think aren’t far behind. Now I’m just not sure what to do next. Any advice appreciated. I’m on a budget but should I purchase a tent and lights? If so, which ones. I’m in Ohio and they’re finally legal. I’m having 80-90 degree weather right now. Can I put them outside? Help! Lol. TIA!! :))

Seedlings like very high humidity. A cheap solution is to place a clear jar of some sort over them in the soil while they grow for the first week.

If you plan to grow indoors, a tent (or some other environment control space) and light are required, as cannabis requires very high intensity light during late vegetative phase, and early-mid bloom phase, as well as different levels of temperature and humidity, which is easier maintained in an enclosed space.

You can check out vpdchart.com, or another site with optimal temperature and humidity levels for each phase of growth, if you get stuck.

I hope this helps.

You CAN grow outside, and now’s a great time to put the seedlings out. You’ll want to harden them off first, so give them an hour of direct sunlight the first day, 2 hours the second day and watch them closely for another couple of days to make sure they don’t get nuked by all that direct sunlight.

If you’re growing inside, - as @resimax said, you’ll need a tent before flipping to flower so you can force their daytime length to 12 hours.

Depending on where you are growing, and the genetics, of course. Today is Summer Solstice, and as the days get shorter, flowering may commence in as little as 15 hours of daylight, genetics depending. That is of course, if they are sexually mature enough, and if not, should continue to vegetate. But then, you’ll want to know how long flowering time is for the particular cultivar, as to harvest before it gets too cold, location-dependent.

Up in the mountains of upstate New York, here. Brutal rain all season, and sharp and sudden season changes come September. It’s not easy, but I’ve been doing it somewhat successfully for more than 20 years. Hint: my success comes from sowing many plants, as I expect to lose more than half,

Welcome!

First of all, that cross sounds delightful.

Second, what kind of growing do you want to do? What side of Ohio are you in? I’m originally from Dayton.

You can grow them outside. Are you thinking of putting them in pots or in the ground. Make a plan for water and bugs!

You can get a tent and light. At least get a light of you grow inside. If you don’t care that it smells like weed, and you don’t have any kids/ pets to bite on the leaves it will be fine.

I know I asked a lot of questions, but there are 7000 different ways to grow weed. I use a bubble bucket style DWC.

Glad you are here! Enjoy OG!

Thank you so much for your awesome reply! Those plants look amazing! I’m really not sure what I want to do or what is simpler. I was looking into an affordable tent and lights on Amazon (I will copy and paste down below), but I’ve seen that you may need a fan or ventilation system?? If I did outside I was thinking about doing 5 gallon as I already have some of those and I’m not sure how I would go about that. Also what about soil? Do they need anything special? Right now I just have them in regular potting soil

Cannabis desires soil with the right NPK ratio, different for both vegetation and blooming. Potting soil makes a poor soil, as it does not have adequate aeration or water retention properties. A good soil has a good amount of organic matter (compost, earthworm castings, etc), aeration (perlite, pumice, etc), and water retention properties (spaghnum peat moss, coco coir, mulches, etc).

Potting soil also varies in quality, and may contain fertilizers of varying quantities and breadth.

The ventilation system, as well as a possible heater, humidifier, and dehumidifier, is ideal because growing in an enclosed space, humidity will continue to rise as plants transpire (and respire at night), and pots evaporate. Cannabis has a narrow range of temperature and humidity for optimal growth, though a bit wider if optimal is not of concern. Humidity, on the other hand, is very important to manage properly, especially during the seedling stage and mid-late bloom phase. Bud rot is our worst enemy.

Note, that when we talk about humidity with regards to gardening, we normally mean relative humidity, which is a mathematical function of temperature. This means, humidity will change with temperature, and vice versa, so managing both is more important, as to not offset the other outside of the ideal range.

What’s also troubling, is that the optimal ranges for cannabis greatly overlap the optimal ranges for many types of fungal growth, such as powdery mildew and botrytis.

For these reasons, I would research the topic of temperature and humidity for indoor cannabis cultivation, and the equipment needed for your climate, before purchasing even a tent, which may be too small/large, or incompatible with the rest of your equipment/environment in some way.

I’ll steer you to indoors, because that’s what I’m better at, and it seems simpler to me.

This can get as complicated or as simple as you would rather. Yes, you do need fans and humidity control and temp control in your tent. You need light and a medium and nutrition.

How much space do you want to devote to a tent? If I had it to do again, [I’d buy a tent like this](VIVOSUN D436 2-in-1 4x3 Grow Tent, 48"x36"x72" High Reflective Mylar with Multi-Chamber and Floor Tray for Hydroponic Indoor Plant https://a.co/d/0bvbfqtz).

You can make a whole floor of your house your grow space, as long as you can control the environment in the area.

Once you decide how much space you are working with you can match a light to the space. You will need a thermometer and hygrometer they can be $2 or $200, I have the [this one](Govee Indoor Hygrometer Thermometer 3 Pack, Bluetooth Humidity Temperature Gauge with Large LCD Display, Notification Alert with Max Min Records, 2 Years Data Storage Export for Room Greenhouse, Black https://a.co/d/0hAV6u1d) . Imo, any inline fan and a oscillating fan are all you need for fans. Dependent on your space.

I can’t talk to you about soil because I’m garbage at it. If you’re interested in hydro let me know. There are a bunch of hydro growers around and they are all very helpful

Careful when putting recently-sprouted young Seedlings in a Window having direct Sunlight. Window Panes magnify the Sun’s intensity. They may be too immature to withstand the effects. Good luck, you can do it. It can be trial/error starting out, just don’t get discouraged. Don’t be shy regarding reaching out to the OG Community, as you won’t find a more helpful and knowledgeable collection of highly respected individuals. Take care, stay safe and, be well…mister :honeybee: :100:  :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: SPECIAL NOTE: I apologize… :fireworks: :fireworks: :fireworks: WELCOME!!! :fireworks: :fireworks: :fireworks:

Thank you so much! I think I’m going to try the outside method for my first time. If it does not go well then I will invest in some lights and tents and try again!!

Ditto. Best advice I can offer is to read. As someone else pointed out there are many ways to grow and not one of them is the perfect way to grow. It took me approximately 5 years to get to a point that I felt I was growing with forethought and intent and not just panicking and reacting. Currently entering 7th year.

I find great pleasure in growing beyond enjoying the harvest. Remember smoking cannabis isn’t addictive but growing it can become addictive.

Good growing

Ask the questions. This is a great place.
Overgrow is a cannabis community like no other!
Though I will say, Growweedeasy.com was my go-to when I started. There is a lot of helpful information and tutorials there. Check it out.

Welcome @SaraM16
What anonymous510 said is so true :+1:

Persevere, and you will be rewarded. And the process of growing these plants is enjoyable in and of itself.

Those Lemon Wookie v2 sound great. :yum: I hope you get a female. :100:

I’m an inside grower only currently. Growing them inside will require some grow equipment to succeed. ie dedicated space or tent, light, soil/medium, airflow, proper temperature and humidity, food, and some experience and etc. That last will come with time and mistakes. It’s okay. Things get easier as you go. :sparkles:

If you can’t swing the cash for new grow gear then outside is a great option with a potential huge yield. But there are some different things to think about when growing out compared to inside. I cut my teeth outside.

Growing is as expensive/complicated as you want it to be or make it. Most of all, just have fun and enjoy.:blush:
