I too often deal with damp-off in winter. Can easily lose 25% of seedlings in a cold spell. Heat in house is set at 68 and I bet it’s closer to 63 in basement especially close to the ground. Wish I had more lights for winter but I don’t do this for a living.
Results are in. After 2.5 days of seed floating in darkness, its clear that some of the seeds are eager to get out of their shells…
The largest tails were found on COPA - Diesel Project:
Also - Copa Project 25
I saw 100% germination on the Copa - Ancient Elephantizer as well:
Good Germination was also spotted on the Blue Tara:
There was some activity spotted on several of the others, maybe not all ready to go into dirt yet:
No activity present on Copa - Purple Moonshine x GSD yet, so I’ll give it more time.
I put five seeds in tap water and in 2.5 days there were tails - all of them. One sunk when I was moving the shot glass around
I always soak seeds for 24 hours before putting them directly into soil, I have never found any correlation myself between floating or sinking seeds and a germination failure or success rate. I have had some that float not germinate and I have had some that sink not germinate but nothing that stands out.
all good info everyone thanks for your inputs its nice to see everyone’s results
So these were soaked for 24 hours…they sank, and placed directly on top of the perlite… Seems to work…we’ll see in a couple of days if the are able to root correctly.
So update…this seems successful…I added a cm layer of miracle grow to the top so they won’t dry out…
I wouldn’t call this the best experiment…I should have placed them on the perlite – with no soak…maybe not add the soil till they are established .
100% success though…also there’s a random bean I thew in the perlite…you might be able to make it out .
me out of 4so far 2sprouted one i tried puting in a rapid rooter it did not make it the other is in soil its not fully sprouted but im optimistic it will shed its shell and reveal its cottledon today
Are you on float tech @amumayuk ??
yes im the op
@amumayuk That’s what I thought Bro … … …
i knew you knew just by the question
Yes I bit a $250 seed after soaking it for 3 days with no cracking.
thats quite the line up, lots of choices to enjoy come harvest time. enjoy the grow.
I have had seeds in the water for 7 plus days, only to take them out and carefully pop the shell a tiny bit. Once you hear the pop, you’ll know if successful the next morning when the tails are either popping out, or the seeds sunk.
I’ve also had a cross of mine go 10 days in a direct sow then popped up vigorously like it wasn’t taking its time getting there. 🤷
nice roots popping. the diesel projest was sold out before i could snag it. but testing some other strains for copa. ether x gsd and gsd x skunk 1.
I could go in the ground today, all my starters are already looking for more soil. Not going to have stable weather for another month.
Yo guys, just droppin’ in for a minute! Posted this in my thread, but want to add my findings here too! I’m ALWAYS poppin’ some more beans around here and, like everyone I suppose, I get some ‘good’ batches and some ‘bad’ batches. I’ve tried worm castings ( ), water soaks, water & hydro Peroxide, cracking, sanding…you name it! Here’s my latest results w/float-tech!
Now, in the interest of Bro-Science… 555! I had a short run of shitty germination lately. Discovered that it was nematodes in my seedling mix that were causing the problems. But I also just had 2 or 3 strains where I got “ZERO” germination (Not even a root-tip pop in soak!) and both times I got belated messages saying they should have been lightly sanded. Now I have a cigar tube with a piece of rolled up sandpaper inside that I use ‘when I know to expect difficulties’, but this time I decided to just very lightly draw a fingernail file across the ridge of each seed (2 sides) with 5 light draws. No pressure downwards on the seed, just dragging across. These were soaked by dropping onto the surface of the 45 ml. h2O & .5 ml. of 6% hydrogen peroxide. After 24 hours, I ‘sink’ the seeds, pour off the water, decanting it 3 times. The third wash (50 ml.)stays on the seeds with no additional H.P. added. At 19 hours after they went in, here’s what I see (and updates at 30 hours);
@GMan
Lemon Thai - 6 of 8 (EDIT; 6 am (30 hrs.) 8/8!)
@ShiskaberrySavior
Orange Goji - 3/5 (EDIT; 6 am 5/5!)
Goji f2 x Lemon Thai 4/5 (EDIT; 6 am 5/5!)
Oaxaca x Lemon Thai 3/5 (EDIT; 6 am 4/5!)
So at the very least, it doesn’t appear to have ‘hurt’ anything!
This morning; 22 out of 23! Good enough for this non-governmental work!!!
And this concludes our test of the Emergency Germination System, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming!
