A buddy of mine is currently doing a pheno hunt and noticing he is getting a lot of pollen sacs (empty and full) and banana’s in the lower buds of a decent amount of the plants. I’ve heard claims that if you flower a plant from seed without vegging a specific amount of time, that the plant will throw pollen sacs on lower buds and if you cut it out they do not produce pollen sacs in their next generations? Is this true?
My personal opinion, is that the genetics are unstable and not worth keeping.
I have never done it but I have seen many go 12/12 from the start with no issues. I would think its more a genetic or environmental thing in our buddies case.
I feel it is strain dependent and a matter of choice. The Chem 91 and Mendo purps strains will pretty much always throw some nanners down below if you don’t keep the bottoms trimmed up or give them too strong of nutes but people keep those strains around because they are so good. And their progeny are known to herm too. Of course, those strains may not be suitable for commercial grows that don’t want to flirt with a potentially seeded crop and commercial-minded growers might just chuck any questionable plant.
I’ve grown stuff from 12/12 and it caused no issues. Genetics, to much stress(light, nutes, environmental) are factors that can lead to herms, after last run I finally caved and bought some optic foliar switch to hopefully prevent anymore.
Definitely not the lighting schedule. That’s genetic my friend. A nanner here and there on an absolutely exceptional stand out plant is one thing, but I think a few herms here or there has become far too accepted. I have a few exceptions to the rule but for the most part if it herms it’s getting tossed, just not worth it imo nor am I into furthering more herm prone plants into the industry so even if it’s a keeper with a herm (very rare but there are and has been a few ) I refuse to use those too breed unless there truly is no other option and even if so I won’t pass them around whatsoever just my opinion on the matter
