Yes, likewise @LegsMahoney , I’m so looking forward to spring this year. Well every year, but this year will be fun for sure
It is deff working better than the first one Legs. I’m convinced I did not break up the plant material good enough with the sugar.
The liquid is about halfway up the plant material now but it is all very wet…
The banana is really looking like it’s starting to work as well…
Nice!!! How do you control “Corn Earworms” growing right next to corn? Not being a smart ass, just curious because it’s a problem where I live. Lots of corn farmers around me…
I made grape FFJ in a 10gal bucket and ended up with 3 1/2 gallons of juice. The 10gal wasn’t completely full, so it’s not a good representation of % made… I noticed that FFJ was considerably heavier than milk…
very Interesting
I mean I dunno what it’s supposed to look like but that looks pretty good to me!
Hey! This was heirloom corn: just a small patch in BC Canada, it was only two rows on each side of these big girls, can’t say I ran into corn worms, so I can’t speak from any specific experience. However the spray I used on this 50x50’ garden plot was a garlic and habanero ‘smoothie’ which is then strained and diluted and applied as a foliar. I mainly used it on the greens when they were young because something was having a go at em early on when they were too small to handle it. Pests suck in general, I hope you can find the silver bullet, do the corn worms dig into bud?$!
I heard they bite too…
JK, sorry couldn’t resist lol…
It looks like there is some mold on the top of my FPJ.
Is that a no go then? I have 2 batches going and both have a little bit. Looks like it is only on the top around the edges.
I would, personally, restart that FPJ. Once mold has a foothold it’s very aggressive and will reproduce at a faster rate than the organisms you’re trying to encourage.
Next batch, use a weight (like a bag of water inside another sealed bag, or a fermentation stone) to make sure all the plant material remains submerged.
I did weigh it down with a bag full of water as you suggested but the material still didn’t get fully submerged. Should I add water to it if that is the case next go?
…
Yeah, I think more water/more weight oughta get you where you’re going. I often have to kind of shimmy the bag through the jar opening door to just how much water is in the inner bag.
Also, give the mixture a good stir after adding the unrefined sugar, to make sure all the plant material is exposed to it
I’m pretty sure that white mold is normal, nothing to worry about.
I’m going to strain it tonight and see what comes of it @OkieWormFarmer.
My banana is ready as well so big night of watching things drip lol
Appreciate the heads up,I have been letting everything get moldy thinking it was helping, heard somewhere that I needed a fungus dominated media (including any and all inputs) I ass-u-me’d that all molds and funguses are better than none
Thank you,I need to get a better understanding !
Peace
Sure! And it’s not incorrect that fungi are beneficial; trichoderma, firefang, leaf mold, and many more, all contribute to the soil web.
The intention of fermentation though, is to increase bacterial populations to the exclusion of other micro life, which is why we don’t want fungi in your ferments.
Good luck on the next batch my friend!
This is my first attempt at LABs. Does it look right? Seems like very little curd and no layer at the bottom.
I used brown rice washed water for a few days until the smell changed. Then I added it to 2% milk (only milk I had). Been about 3-4 days now.
Looks right to me but I’d get a more experienced point of view as well. I’d assume the ratio is a bit off to what you usually see due to the 2% but I’d think it should still work.
Again, more experienced people may know better.
How’s it smell? Like cheese?
That’s the other thing. I’ve made cheese before, and this doesn’t smell like cheese at any stage of the process. It really stunk after the first day (can’t describe it), but at least it doesn’t stink anymore. Doesn’t smell bad at all.
Hmmm, mine still has a pretty strong aroma. Maybe mine is the one that’s fubar? Lol
Take my words with a grain of salt
I will say though, since I’ve been foilier spraying the house plants with it and a bit of my FFJ I made, they are going bonkers! Will post some pics later when I get home
